He angitūtanga | About the role
Te Papa Atawhai is offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated and skilled individual to be at the leading edge of iwi partnership and conservation leadership in Whakatane.
As our next Ranger, Community, Treaty Implementation you'll join our existing Community team based in our offices in Whakatane. The Māori (mana whenua and matāwaka) landscape in the DOC Whakatane region is complex, DOC staff are reliant on excellent knowledge of the Māori landscape to undertake their work effectively.
The role contributes to conditions within the DOC Whakatane Region that best provide for high-quality relationships with whānau, hapū and iwi and supports DOC staff in understanding the Treaty landscape of Whakatane and building their capacity to fulfil Treaty responsibilities. This role also supports the Whakatane Operations Teams to enact their Treaty priorities, developing their cultural capability and mitigating risk from non-fulfilment of Treaty responsibilities.
**The position will be focussed on**:
- supporting the roll-out of work scheduling and reporting for Treaty settlement commitments
- facilitating coordination of regular meetings with whānau, hapū and iwi
- supporting opportunities for whānau, hapū and iwi to build their internal capabilities to practise their responsibilities as kaitiaki
- keeping up-to-date with the iwi landscape in Whakatane and ensuring this information is shared with our operations team.

We are looking for a natural people leader who is passionate about supporting a positive team culture. You will have great communication and engagement skills allowing a heightened sense of self-awareness and emotional intelligence. You will know how to engage effectively with mana whenua and show a willingness to develop your capability in this area, allowing you to work effectively with whānau, hapū, and iwi.
If you have the following attributes, we are keen to hear from you:
- Te reo me ona tikanga Māori.
- Whakawhanaungatanga - an ability to foster and develop relationships with colleagues, the public and tangata whenua.
- Ability to engage and support the aspirations of tangata whenua about conservation and Treaty settlements.
- Ability to see the big picture and to have the enthusiasm to find workable practical solutions.
- Ability to navigate and balance differing perspectives while maintaining professional integrity.
- Knowledge of, or willingness to acquire, Whakatane iwi history, traditions, and customary practices.
- Comprehension of settlement legislation and Aotearoa History.
- Full New Zealand driver licence.
