Job Overview: We are seeking an experienced Medical Laboratory Scientist to join our team as a Newborn Screening Specialist for the National Metabolic Screening Programme.

About Us: Te Whatu Ora – Health New Zealand is the overarching organisation for New Zealand's national health service. Our main sites are Auckland City Hospital, Greenlane Clinical Centre, and Starship Children's Hospital, located in central Auckland.

The Role: As a Newborn Screening Specialist, you will work closely with the current Scientific Officer offering technical and clinical support to the Newborn Screening section (NBS) of the Specialist Chemical Pathology department at LabPlus. You will be responsible for routine running and troubleshooting of the screening assays, including in-house developed expanded screening assays, development of new assays, training and mentoring of staff, taking a lead role in interpreting and reporting of results, liaising with clinical staff, and ensuring National Screening Unit (NSU) quality requirements and external accreditation requirements are met.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain expertise in tandem mass spectrometry and other methodologies and instrumentation
  • Lead the development of new screening assays and protocols
  • Provide technical and clinical support to the NBS section
  • Mentor and train staff on new procedures and techniques
  • Liaise with clinical staff and ensure high-quality patient care
  • Ensure compliance with NSU quality requirements and external accreditation requirements

Requirements: To be successful in this role, you must have an MSc, PhD, or appropriate higher scientific qualification, a current annual practicing certificate, and be registered as a Medical Laboratory Scientist with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand.
