The Science Group at Environment Canterbury provides environmental monitoring and data, research, and advice to internal and external customers. This role will contribute to informing decision making across most of the organisation, including organisational strategic intent, processing of consents, compliance, incident response, plan development, and progress towards regional and national environmental targets.

About the Role

This Senior Contaminated Land Scientist position will provide high-level research, technical leadership, and advice on contaminated land management. Key responsibilities include:

  • Coaching and mentoring developing staff.
  • Participating in committee and community working groups.
  • Conducting research on the impact of contaminated land on Canterbury communities.
  • Providing quality assurance of research reports and advice in contaminated land management.
  • Contributing to science leadership within the Science Group.
  • Representing Environment Canterbury at meetings and events as required.

About You

To succeed in this role, you'll have:

  • A PhD in a relevant field (contaminated land) or a Master's degree with at least 10 years' professional experience.
  • Certified Environmental Practitioner - Site Contamination Specialist qualification.
  • Strong communication skills to interpret complex scientific data for varied audiences.
  • Data analysis, interpretation, and reporting skills.
  • A collaborative approach and passion for science.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development.
  • Understanding of Resource Management Act requirements in relation to contaminated land and waste management.
  • Knowledge of te ao Māori principles and the evolving obligations under the Treaty of Waitangi.
