Drawing from different science disciplines, the Science Group plays a key role in informing decision-making across most of the organisation including informing organisational strategic intent, processing of consents, our approach to compliance, responding to incidents, the development of plans, and measuring our progress towards regional and national environmental targets.Reporting to the Hazards Science Manager, this role will lead a team to provide research and advice on contaminated land and waste management matters.More about the role:Lead, coach, mentor, and develop direct reportsDevelop and maintain fit-for-purpose work programmes and resourcesActively participate in committee and community working groupsManage contracts & contractors fairly under the appropriate procurement guidelineLead research on the impact of contaminated land & waste on Canterbury communitiesManage communications & enquiries on contaminated land & waste mattersFrom time to time, as required, the role may require work outside of normal work hours for emergency and flood response and to represent Environment Canterbury at meetings and events with partners, other agencies, and the community.As a technical leader of people, you'll juggle a hands-on role, along with your people leadership skills.
You'll have experience in leading change, inspiring innovative thinking, influencing behaviour change, and adoption of new ways of working, with a strongly collaborative style.You'll have a Master (preferred) or Bachelor of Science degree in a contaminated land field along with five years of professional experience in contaminated land and/or waste work with a Master's degree, or ten years of professional experience in contaminated land and/or waste work with a Bachelor's degree.To enjoy this role, you'll have:Ability to lead, coach and elevate team capabilityDevelop and maintain fit-for-purpose work programmesDesign and lead research on contaminated land issuesAbility in forming and maintaining strong, collaborative working relationshipsEstablish connections and collaboration with Nga Runanga, in relation to environmental science, including data sovereigntyA strong understanding of contaminated land and/or waste management issues in Canterbury and involvement in leading research projectsUnderstanding of the Resource Management Act requirements in relation to contaminated land and waste managementA commitment to and an understanding of te ao Maori, awareness of the evolving obligations under the Treaty of Waitangi, together with experience of applying this in a workplace setting, including the ability to lead work that requires engagement with iwiWe are privileged to be working with Nga Papatipu Runanga, stakeholders, and our wider community.For a confidential chat about this role, please contact Brodie Young (027 226 5134).Applications close on Wednesday, 2 April.
