We are currently seeking an experienced Principal Conservator to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for leading the conservation department, overseeing the care and conservation of our collections, and promoting research in this field. You will also be expected to manage conservation programmes, staff, and budgets, and collaborate with other departments to integrate conservation principles into all aspects of Gallery operations. If you are passionate about art, conservation, and preservation, and have the skills and experience to lead a team, we encourage you to apply for this exciting opportunity.

About the Role

This is a permanent, full-time position of 40 hours per week. The successful candidate will be required to work collaboratively with the Head of Exhibitions and Collection Services and other senior staff members. The role will involve hands-on, lab-based work, as well as administrative tasks, research, writing, and public speaking. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of conservation principles and ethics, and be eligible for full membership in the New Zealand Conservators of Cultural Materials (NZCCM).

Requirements
  • Masters degree or PhD in conservation or related field.
  • Accreditation with professional body of conservation, such as NZCCM, AICCM, ICON, or AIC.
  • At least 10 years of experience working as a conservator.
  • Extensive experience in complex treatment of unique and irreplaceable artworks.
  • Familiarity with museum values, procedures, and standards.
