About the Role

We are seeking an experienced academic leader to join our team as the Head of School for Communication and Media Studies at Auckland University of Technology (AUT). As a key member of the Faculty's leadership team, you will play a critical role in shaping the future of our School and driving excellence in teaching and research.

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading a team of academics, researchers, and support staff in delivering high-quality programs and contributing to the advancement of knowledge in their field. You will work closely with the Dean's Executive Team to drive the Faculty's vision and mission, and contribute to the development of the University's strategic plan.

The ideal candidate will have a strong track record of academic leadership, a deep understanding of the communication and media studies sector, and a proven ability to inspire and motivate others. They will be committed to creating a positive and inclusive work environment that values diversity, equity, and excellence.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the development and implementation of the School's strategic plan, ensuring alignment with the Faculty's and University's goals.
  • Provide academic leadership and management to the School, including teaching, research, and administrative responsibilities.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and excellence within the School, promoting a positive and inclusive work environment.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with industry partners, stakeholders, and alumni, promoting the School's reputation and influencing policy and practice.
  • Contribute to the Faculty's and University's strategic planning, decision-making, and governance processes.
Requirements
  • PhD in a relevant field.
  • Senior academic leadership experience, preferably in a higher education institution.
  • Distinguished academic achievement and research record, with a strong publication history and a demonstrated ability to secure research funding.
  • Proven ability to lead and manage teams, with a track record of developing and sustaining growth, and ensuring a positive work culture.
  • Strong interpersonal, negotiation, and diplomacy skills, combined with a coaching and consultative approach to leadership.
  • Able to work collaboratively with colleagues from diverse disciplines and backgrounds.

A competitive remuneration package will be offered to the successful candidate, commensurate with skills and experience. The appointment is expected to commence in early 2024, subject to final approval.
