**The Organisation**

Environment Canterbury is the Canterbury/Waitaha Regional Council. As Regional Government we are mandated - by legislation and by the community - to undertake environmental regulation and protection, to prepare our region for hazards and a changing climate.

We are in the midst of once in a generation change - making this both an exciting and pivotal time to join the executive leadership team as we navigate this change.

**The Role**

Christchurch based and reporting to the Chief Executive, the Director Operations is a member of the executive team with responsibility for over 300 staff covering a wide range of professional functions. The directorate teams include - but are not limited to - those who respond to environmental incidents, the Harbourmaster’s Office looking after navigational safety across our freshwater and marine environments, river engineers and flood response teams, biodiversity and biosecurity experts, consents and enforcement officers, and those who support that work. This regulatory and on the ground work is key to protecting people and the environment.

To ensure the work is directed to have the most impact will require your visionary leadership, ability to respond to ongoing change, interpersonal and relationship skills, and your ability to turn strategic intent into operational functions.

The role is community facing and the organisation’s relationship with Mana Whenua, coupled with the Director Operation’s community focus, will be instrumental to success. As a result, we are seeking a high performer who can hold multiple concepts and areas of work at any given time, working in partnership with Mana Whenua and collaborating both internally and externally.

**The Person**

To succeed in this role, you will already be a confident leader who is able to lead a diverse team of professionals through ongoing change, optimising their skills while providing clarity and accountability inside the organisation and out.

You will have experience in a large customer or community focused organisation, dealing with complex issues and working with multiple stakeholders. In addition, you will need to understand the benefits of working in partnership with Mana Whenua and be able to help foster the relationships with Papatipu Rūnanga.

**You will need to demonstrate**:

- strong communication and relationship skills
- substantial executive leadership experience, ideally with a background in customer/ community facing operational delivery and services
- a future focused, courageous leadership style, fostering a culture of positive change and innovation in a supportive, empowering working environment
- an integrative approach, inspiring your team to deliver successful organisational outcomes through direction setting, clarity of roles and accountability
