Accident Investigator

Wellington City, New Zealand New Zealand Government Full time

Accident Investigator - Marine | Kaitirotiro Aitua
- Marine engineering / naval architect background
- Develop a career in marine accident investigation
- New central Wellington office

The role
We're seeking a marine engineer or naval architect to join the investigation services team as an Accident Investigator - Marine.
As an Accident Investigator - Marine you'll join a small, close-knit team investigating marine accidents throughout New Zealand. You'll attend accident sites and undertake thorough site examinations and evidence collection, review, research, and analyse the evidence, before drafting inquiry reports, findings and recommendations for consideration by the Commission.
The role is based in Wellington and will involve travel and overnight stays.

About the Organisation
The Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) investigates significant transport accidents across the three modes of aviation, rail, and marine, with a view to avoiding similar occurrences in the future. Multi-disciplinary teams investigate and analyse the circumstances of these occurrences, supporting the Commission to consider the facts, and make findings and recommendations to improve transport safety, rather than to ascribe blame.
Skilled investigators, led by an Investigator in Charge, attend accident sites, often in remote locations, to gather evidence for each particular investigation within these three modes.
The investigation process leads to a report outlining the findings and safety recommendations to the sector.
The Commission has set a visionary goal of “No Repeat Accidents - Ever”

Skills and experience
We're seeking specific experience for this role - that of a marine engineer or naval architect, with practical marine sector experience, and you'll have the academic qualifications to back this up.
Given the role requires you to conduct a very thorough investigation process and produce high quality investigation reports, you will also need to have:

- excellent analytical and problem solving capability
- very high attention to detail
- excellent plain language writing, and oral communication skills
- an innate ability to think logically, anticipate risk, and identify solutions
- good time management skills
- excellent relationship and stakeholder engagement skills
- marine sector experience.

As you'll be attending accident sites, often in remote locations, you'll also need:

- the emotional and psychological maturity to handle stressful and emotionally difficult situations
- to be medically and physically fit.

Your work will be interesting and varied and could involve a range of marine vessels, with you engaging with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders. You'll have an agile mindset, be able to work collaboratively and positively with like-minded professionals, and have high levels of diplomacy, tact, and professionalism, particularly when deployed to accident sites.
In return, you can develop a career as a highly skilled accident investigator, and receive world class training and professional development in a supportive and development focused organisation - one that is internationally regarded and clearly focused on the avoidance of repeat accidents.

How to apply
For further information and a detailed job description, please contact Jacaleen Williams at Talent International on 021 732 996.
Applications close 5pm on Sunday 23 June 2024.
