Science Manager
new zealand permanent negotiableIntegrating science into policy development and implementation is at the forefront of this team’s work - and the Science Manager plays a key part in driving that integration and advice to all corners of the organisation.
**About the role**
You’ll lead a team of specialist scientists who work across eight science programmes, all of which contribute to important environmental outcomes across our region - and it’s a big region Making up eight percent of Aotearoa’s total land area, it incorporates three major river catchments, mountains and hill country, coastline, bush and forests - and your team will provide high quality research, data, advice, and action right across the region’s natural resources.
A level three management role, this is a fantastic opportunity to take your career to the next level and lead this highly respected science team. You’ll ensure the science integration into our strategy and policy work, provide sound scientific advice to Council, the Executive, and colleagues on all areas involving the region’s natural resources, regulatory work, and resource management. You’ll be responsible for ensuring the delivery of our state of the environment reporting, and the science to support central government policy direction through our regional plans.
**About you**
You may already be in a management role, or looking for that next step in your career to more fully develop your leadership and management skills. You’ll be able to mentor and lead your team, foster excellent stakeholder relationships at all levels, support embedding Mātauranga Māori, and embrace being inclusive and collaborative.
You’ll be competent communicating at all levels, and able to break down complex science clearly and concisely, and able to influence and build strong credibility, aided by your ability to make sound, timely decisions.
While ideally you’d have local government experience, what is important is the ability to quickly embrace the challenges and nuances within a regional council environment.
Given this is a manager role, you will need to have practical experience both in the field and an office environment as you’re not actively undertaking the science work yourself, but managing a team of highly capable and competent science analysts, communicators and scientists.
- a postgraduate degree in a relevant natural science, and experience working within environmental science
- knowledge and understanding of current environmental issues, the Resource Management Act, and environmental policy
- an understanding of the mechanics and management of scientific research programmes
- experience and skills to support budget, project and people management.
