Right hand role and 2iC to the Head of Health and Safety
- Work at the heart of the electricity industry; complex and high-risk work environment
- Leverage your knowledge in safety management systems, policies, and practices
This is a corporate role, which drives positive health and safety outcomes to keep our people, those we work with, and the public safe.
Transpower has a dual role as New Zealand's owner and system operator of the National Grid. As the transmission network asset owner, we keep the energy flowing - transporting high voltage electricity from where it is generated to cities, towns, and some major industrial users nationwide.
Our transmission network includes over 12,000 km of transmission lines, 25,000 transmission towers and 170 substations. As System Operator, we operate the electricity market and power system 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
We currently employ over 900 people nationwide and are growing, with an extended Service Providers whānau of over 1,000 who are responsible for the delivery of construction, maintenance, and fault response on the National Grid.
With accelerating demand for electrification to meet climate change goals, our business will continue to scale at pace, with the health, safety and wellbeing of our people remaining a top priority. Our people care, and our safety performance is strong.
About the team
The Health and Safety team at the centre of our organisation, and works in partnership with Transpower's Executive Leadership Team, managers, employees, contracted service providers, and external experts. They develop robust health and safety strategies, systems, programmes, policies, and practices. These ensure public safety, and our employees and contractors are safe, remain healthy, and engaged.
The Opportunity - a pivotal 2iC Health and Safety leadership role
In this key senior influencing role, you will lead safety improvements through strategic and operational leadership, aligning with our zero-harm safety ambition. You will have accountability for the public safety management system and other initiatives defined by our health and safety strategy and annual operational plan.

- Provide strategic, technical, and operational advice on management systems, processes, procedures, and work plans for both field and corporate environments.
- Promote and educate on health and safety matters internally and with external partners.
- Work closely with and support the Head of Health and Safety, and the team, to continually improve the health and safety management system, practices, and processes to deliver outstanding safety performance outcomes.
What will you bring?
- Hold a level 6 diploma (NEBOSH Diploma, Post Graduate Diploma in OSH) or higher in occupational health and safety or a related field.
- Have senior WHS corporate experience, including interfacing with executive teams (this is not a field-based role - you will be working on the system of safety)
- Proven ability to design and drive actions through influence and/or others resulting in measurable improvements evidenced by data and insights
- Proven ability to advance health and safety management systems, policies, practices, and processes.
- Have succinct communication skills and exceptional ability to engage and influence at all levels, both within an organisation and beyond (to the leadership teams in service delivery partners/contractors).
