He angitūtanga | About the Role
Our organisational goal is to be an honourable Treaty Partner. The Strategic Māori Manager/Pou Tairangahau will support us to enable our kaimahi to build authentic and meaningful relationships that support the aspirations of Māori and reflect the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in our mahi.
Supporting our Kaihautū Matarautaki/Operations Director for the Hauraki, Waikato, Taranaki region, this is an influential and strategic role where you will lead our region's approach with whānau, hapū and iwi.
This is a role that calls on your knowledge and experience of Tikanga Māori and Te Ao Māori, commitment and passion for Te Taiao, and ability to work strategically and collaboratively to influence others.
**This role will**:
- support Kaihautū Matarautaki on implementation of a strategic framework for stronger relationships with whānau, hapū and iwi
- provide strategic Māori advice and direction to Kaihautū Matarautaki and members of regional leadership team such as identifying relationship, support, or lead opportunities to work with hapū and iwi
- lead our approach to building cultural capability of the region's staff and provide support, coaching and mentoring to the Kaihautū Matarautaki and senior staff
- provide regional leadership on the implementation of treaty settlements at place, in support of accountable managers
- work on national priorities, systems, policies, and strategies where required by DOC's national Treaty Relationships Group.
This is one of two Strategic Māori Managers/Pou Tairangahau in the region providing an opportunity to collaborate on strengths, approaches, networks, and knowledge bases.
The preference for this role is to be based in Hamilton, although does have the flexibility to work from one of the offices in the region and travel will be required across the region. This role is a full time, permanent position.
He kōrero mōu | What we are looking for
You will be fluent (or progressing towards fluency) in Te Reo Māori and have a strong knowledge of tikanga and kawa. Proven relationship management experience is needed to assist you to comfortably engage and work in partnership with iwi and tangata whenua.
**In addition, you will**:
- be confident in and respected for your Te Ao Māori expertise
- be a confident mentor and coach, with demonstrated coaching experience previously
- have strong written and oral communication skills
- show strong understanding and knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, its principles and implications on society and conservation
- have knowledge and experience working with business, Government Departments and Local Authorities is desirable.
It is also desirable to have existing relationships or understanding of the iwi landscape across the Hauraki/ Waikato districts.
