Auckland City, New Zealand New Zealand Government Full time

Lead the communication and engagement strategy for the Hauraki Gulf Marine Protection Bill, a landmark initiative in Aotearoa.
- Manage a high-performing team dedicated to enhancing marine conservation across New Zealand's first marine park.
- One-year fixed term opportunity, Auckland location.

**Our vision**: Nature is thriving in Aotearoa | Te Oranga o te Ao Tūroa
The Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai (DOC) serves to protect and restore nature spaces and species across Aotearoa.
Tangata whenua are inextricably linked to the whenua and te taiao, and we desire a future where whānau, hapū and iwi can thrive in their role as rangatira and kaitiaki.
Tō tātou taiāo. Tō tātou hītori. He tāonga tūturu nō Aotearoa. Maioha rawatia. Poipoia rawatia. Tukua.
Our nature. Our history. It's New Zealand's unique legacy. Enjoy it. Enrich it. Pass it on.
He angitūtanga | About the role
The Hauraki Gulf Marine Park is New Zealand's first marine park, and the only national park of the sea in Aotearoa. Covering 1.4 million hectares of ocean, it's more than 20 times the size of Lake Taupō. It includes the Waitematā Harbour, Gulf Islands, Firth of Thames and the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula. It is the seabird capital of the world, and a whale superhighway. It's also intensively used and on the doorstep of our most populated city.
The proposed Hauraki Gulf / Tīkapa Moana Marine Protection Bill will give effect to new marine protection areas that aim to improve the marine health of the Gulf. It will be bespoke legislation, the first of its kind in Aotearoa, and is part of the wider Revitalising the Gulf programme.
Reporting to the Operations Manager of the newly formed Auckland Marine Team, you will support the communications and engagement plan for the proposed Bill. Working effectively with stakeholders to achieve improved outcomes for conservation is key to success and you will clearly demonstrate your engagement and relationship skills across different fields.
**In this role you will**:

- recruit, manage, and develop a high-performing team, ensuring their safety, wellbeing, and professional growth
- lead and support communications with key stakeholders, including iwi, community, and business groups
- support, plan, and deliver community outreach initiatives, including Ministerial events
- collaborate with national teams to create and update content across various platforms, including social media, web pages, and newsletters
- draft formal documents, including Official Information Act requests, briefings, and status reports
- lead the planning, phasing, and tracking of annual, quarterly, and monthly work programmes, managing budgets and identifying solutions for critical cost pressures.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience
If you're passionate about marine conservation and working with others to achieve conservation outcomes, then this role is for you. You must have confidence and awareness to engage with people from all walks of life. You will be a community minded, empathetic and driven individual who can work independently as well as part of a team. Identifying and managing risks and opportunities are critical to this role. Your ability to think strategically and act operationally will contribute to the successful planning and delivery of work programmes.
If you have the following attributes, we are keen to hear from you:

- Confident communicator with strong verbal and written skills.
- Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders, including iwi and community groups.
- Experienced in project planning, budget tracking, and risk management.
- Demonstrated leadership skills with experience in team management and mentoring.
- Understanding and connection to Te Ao Māori, tikanga, and whakapapa.
- Experience in event management, tourism, or hospitality (desirable).

Please note, this role has a strong engagement focus (compared to our standard Senior Ranger/ Supervisor role description) and requirements for the position have been clearly defined in this advertisement.
Ngā āhuatanga kei a mātou | What's in it for you?
DOC places importance on developing a culture where everyone can participate, thrive, and grow. We're working towards being an organisation that is diverse, equitable and inclusive by default. You can learn more about what we offer here.
The salary range for this position is $79,656 to $100,639 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.
Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory - this includes holding a valid work visa that covers the whole period of employment.
We are not engaging with recruitment agencies for this position.
