Kōrero mō te Tūranga - About the Role
This unique and impartial role in New Zealand government contributes to the success of our primary sector by assessing the regulatory systems and recommending enhancements to the systems that MPI administers.
You will be one of two Principal Advisers, working both separately and together on a variety of activities from researching and developing frameworks and programmes to reviewing regulatory systems and practices.
You will influence senior leaders at the highest levels, and report directly to the Inspector General Regulatory Systems who provides critical and impartial advice to the Director General of MPI. This position requires you to effectively connect with stakeholders internally and externally, and proactively facilitate the efficient and effective flow of sound information to and from the Office of the Inspector General Regulatory Systems.
You will need to be able communicate clearly and influence without a mandate. You will be able to grasp complex concepts, and connect issues to provide new insights, and to explain them clearly and competently both verbally, and importantly, in written form.
You will turn your critical and system thinking skills to the complex regulatory systems that support the primary sector, researching emerging themes and corroborating issues raised. You will test key insights with the team and assess the systems using a combination of qualitative and quantitative techniques to shine a light on matters that MPI could enhance.
**Key responsibilities will include**:
- undertaking complex reviews of regulatory practices, elements, and systems both in a team and individually
- researching, and advising the Inspector General Regulatory Systems on good practice regulatory practices, elements, systems and new advancements
- developing tools, frameworks and other outputs to support the work of the Office of the Inspector General Regulatory Systems.
- providing ad-hoc and planned regulatory education, connection, and awareness-building activities across MPI.
The position may occasionally require travel within New Zealand.
Mōu - About You
You will be naturally curious, pragmatic, and you will offer a keen interest and ambition to find opportunities for system change to secure better outcomes for New Zealand's Primary Sector.
You may have a government and/or policy background, have worked in an auditing or reviewing capacity, or have been in a regulatory stewardship role, and have experience working alongside senior leaders.
You will be a thought-leader who is comfortable drawing insights from quantitative and qualitative information, and someone who can distil information into impactful advice. You will challenge conventional norms and use strategic thinking to unpick regulatory problems.
Most importantly, you will be a competent writer with exceptional language and presentation skills.
You will have the ability to engage effectively with a small established team that will support you to develop in your career. You will demonstrate the following to be successful in this role:

- Able to work to deadlines, and complete pieces of work in a timely and quality manner.
Desired
- Current full New Zealand Driver's Licence
- Previous senior experience in government
