Ngā kawenga | About the role
The Principal Communications Adviser is responsible for managing high-profile and complex media issues and the day to day operations of the Department's social media pages. They must have a strong risk radar and exceptional written and oral communication skills. The Principal Communications Adviser also has a key role in enhancing the Department's communications capability through mentoring and supporting other members of the Media Team and through quality assurance of work.
**Key accountabilities include but are not limited to**:
- Support the Media Manager with day to day oversight of the team's responses to media queries, ensuring these are timely, accurate and helpful.
- Identify and help manage potential media issues and actively advise on risks.
- Manage the Department's social media pages through supporting advisers to produce regular posts and to monitor and respond to messages and comments.
- Support the development of media and social media capability within the Department, including training and coaching other members of the Media Team and spokespeople.
This role is based at National Office in Wellington, with the need to be based on site for the majority of the week. This is due to the reactive nature of the role and level of stakeholder support often required at short notice. There is an on-call element to the role, which can be discussed at interview stage.

To be successful in the role of Principal Adviser Communications you will bring the following to the role:
- Excellent judgement in identifying and managing media issues and opportunities.
- Ability to independently navigate sensitive or complex issues and propose a way forward.
- Ability to mentor and influence staff across all levels of the Department.
- Experience managing and growing social media pages.
Utu ā-tau | Salary
The midpoint of the salary range is $137,525 and the full range (85%-120%) is $116,897 - $165,030. Appointment and remuneration will reflect skills and experience relevant to the role.
