Te whiwhinga mahi | The Opportunity
Our Communicable Disease team is a newly established team that sits within the National Public Health Service (NPHS) and will play a critical role across the motu by providing national coordination, response, and management of public health threats.
We have an opportunity to join the Communicable Diseases team as a Principal Advisor. In this role you will be able to contribute to transforming the future of health by supporting the manager of this team, building relationships with and influencing members of NPHS throughout the organisation and providing expert advice to the public health system and associated agencies on a national level.
This mahi will see you having a hands-on approach in developing and reviewing operational policy, tools and frameworks to support the Communicable Disease work programme. You will use your expert knowledge and experience in public health to provide advice and support to the public health system and related agencies nationally, regionally and locally. In this role you will be required to build collaborative and positive relationships with staff in your team as well as colleagues across the wider NPHS directorate and Te Whatu Ora. Building these relationships will be key to your role as these links will allow you to influence and engage with those around you to accommodate operational responses and support the delivery of the work programme.

Mōu | About you
You will be an experienced Senior Advisor looking to advance to the next step in your career, or a Principal Advisor who comes with an expert understanding and knowledge of Public Health functions, ideally within the New Zealand health system. You will be comfortable working through ambiguity and you will have some leadership and mentoring experience that will enable you to support your colleagues to carry out their roles.
You are someone who builds connections quickly and can confidently engage with stakeholders across the organisation and other agencies. You will be an organized and methodical thinker, with an eye for detail. You have strong written skills that allow you to relay information in a way that can be understood by your key audiences and will be capable of peer-reviewing the work of your team.

**You will have**:

- Competency with te ao Māori, tikanga, and te reo Māori or a willingness to learn and grow
- A relevant graduate qualification, or equivalent professional experience and working knowledge of the public health and/or health sectors.
- Advanced thought leadership with robust critical thinking and analytical skills to support quality delivery
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to engage collaboratively with different audiences on complex issues
- Ability to manage competing priorities, and the use of sound judgement, flexibility, and excellent interpersonal skills to implement solutions to complex and ambiguous problems
- Highly developed written and oral communication skills with an ability to take complex information and synthesise into key messages for relevant audiences
- Demonstrated advanced relationship leadership and mentoring skills
