Discover a career with purpose at MBIE

Salary Range $132,000 - $160,000
- Be a leader of Inspectors who are committed to stamping out unlawful employment practices in New Zealand
- Permanent position based in Christchurch Tēnei tūranga - About the role:
The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s (MBIE’s) goal is to create a strong and high performing economy for all. A critical part of that is lifting the quality of our workplaces through a strong foundation of consistent compliance with basic employment standards.

The Labour Inspectorate monitors and enforces New Zealand’s minimum employment standards. We work closely with agencies such as Immigration New Zealand, Inland Revenue and WorkSafe New Zealand to ensure business and the community understand and value the importance of employment standards.

As a Labour Inspectorate Manager, you’ll have the opportunity to use your vision, strategic thinking and influencing abilities to develop a team of inspectors who will deliver credible and consistent assessments and inspections in collaboration with a range of other regulators.
Working with others to ensure broad leadership and necessary training and practice advice to the new team will be crucial in building capability; this requires an individual with vision, passion, strategic capability and strong communication and relationship skills.

In this challenging, but rewarding role in the Labour Inspectorate, you will be working with a diverse range of people and cultures across a wide variety of industry sectors. You will have the power to make decisions and take actions which result in real changes in workplaces and the working lives of New Zealanders.

This role also offers you the opportunity to demonstrate your strong leadership abilities with internal and external stakeholders such as business groups, unions, local authorities, and other key regulatory agencies. To achieve the goal of ‘Fair Workplaces’, a key aspect of this role will be to build business and community support (as well as providing community support).

Our aspirations are echoed in our Māori identity - Hīkina Whakatutuki - which broadly means ‘lifting to make successful'.

MBIE recognises the partnership founded under Te Tiriti o Waitangi between Māori and the Crown and is committed to giving effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi. We will do this through enduring, meaningful and effective partnerships with iwi, Māori, other Māori groups/organisations and the Crown, as this is critical to enable economic and social development, both for Māori and for wider Aotearoa New Zealand. We are committed to continuing to partner with iwi in order to find new sustainable solutions to address long standing systemic and cross-cutting issues facing Māori and wider Aotearoa New Zealand and we are also committed to identifying opportunities for iwi to lead and creating an enabling environment for iwi to leverage these opportunities.
