Transpower's core purpose is to empower the energy future for New Zealand; a future that delivers a net-zero carbon economy and a reliable and secure electricity system. As a lifeline utility with over 900 employees and an extended Service Provider whānau of more than 3,000, we are pivotal in delivering critical infrastructure nationwide.
As demand for electrification accelerates to meet climate goals, our workforce - and that of our Service Providers - must scale significantly. By 2030, we anticipate a 60-100% increase in the service providers required to maintain and develop the National Grid.
To support this growth, the Sector Workforce Development Group, part of our People Division, is committed to defining, developing, and delivering top-tier vocational training programmes that ensure our people and those who work with us possess the skills and capability to undertake their roles effectively and safety. The group also plays a key role in promoting transmission sector jobs and career pathways to support growth.
About the team
The Training and Learning team within the Sector Workforce Development Group is focused on enhancing the quality, efficiency and effectiveness of training programmes through pedagogical excellence. By developing and implementing best practices in teaching methodologies, providing professional development for trainers, and ensuring a learner-centred approach, the team will foster an engaging and supportive learning environment.
About the opportunity
As a key member of the team, you will work closely with the Head of Sector Workforce Development, leading a dedicated team of five permanent staff, with additional external trainers and technical experts brought in as needed.
In this dynamic environment you will quickly establish and manage strategic relationships with a wide range of stakeholders. These include industry bodies such as the Electrical Workers Registration Board and Electricity Engineers Association, peak bodies, as well as service providers, consultants, contractors, and Grid Skills facilitators and moderators.
Your leadership will be crucial in ensuring our training programmes align with industry standards and support the growth and capability of our workforce. You'll lead the systems and processes which define and monitor performance standards for Facilitators/ Trainers and academic compliance (to maintain registration and rating) within the prescribed training delivery portfolio. You'll contribute to the development of the forward schedule of training and orchestrate trainer schedules and cohort starts at multiple locations.
Through the delivery of enhanced learning outcomes using various tools and learning channels, including simulator environments, you'll ensure we build capability of Transpower employees and Service Provider field workers by overseeing a professional and consistent approach to the design and delivery of learning programmes.
Ultimately this role will give you the opportunity to lead exciting change and make a lasting impact on your team and electricity sector training pathways for future generations.
What will you bring?
Drive, pace, and passion for ensuring training excellence You don't need to have electricity sector experience; however, your CV and cover letter will clearly demonstrate:
- A bachelor's degree or above in education or a related field
- 7+ years' experience leading a service delivery team in vocational education and/or work-based training with extensive examples of customer-focused delivery outcomes
- Demonstrated experience in successfully running outsourced agreements and key and critical outsourced vendors

- Highly effective communication, presentation, reporting, analytical and relationship management skills, including advocacy and influencing
- Experience in designing and operationalising strategy to achieve better business outcomes in the training delivery context
- Evidence of improving the quality and velocity of training outcomes
**While not essential, the following will be highly regarded**:
- Strong understanding of pedagogical theories, vocational and adult education, work-based training and leading practice in teaching and learning
- Experience in managing academic risk and quality assurance processes
