He angitūtanga | About the role
The Team Lead National Communications is responsible for leading a team of media and communications experts to increase the public's knowledge and understanding of DOC's work.
The role will see you operate at all levels across the department, from the Director General's Office to our rangers on the ground. Leading a nationally dispersed team of four to six staff, you will be responsible for developing and executing media and communications strategies, and mentor and coach staff to work across all of our channels to target the right audiences and tell DOC's stories.
A key focus of this role involves supporting the Minister of Conservation's office on high priority issues, key announcements, and events, providing collateral, media responses and strategic advice.
The role also has a strong emphasis on reputational risk management, particularly with visitor and staff safety, land management matters, biodiversity and marine species and threats.

**Key areas the position will be focussed on**:

- coaching, mentoring, leading a small team of national advisors, plus helping to provide advice and guidance for wider media and comms team
- management and oversight of critical issues as they arise including advice on high-risk OIA responses
- supporting the Minister of Conservation's office on high priority issues, key announcements, and events
- clear understanding of the Minister's strategic priorities
- crisis communications, risk management, stakeholder engagement, internal communications, and leader-led communications
- leading a continuous improvement of team processes, e.g. crisis comms responses, how to prioritise and manage workflow
- develop a more joined-up approach across the team and other business units to surface media stories and identify reputational risk.

The role requires people leadership experience and energy, to drive the delivery of national strategy and the implementation and management of cohesive communications and collateral for one of Aotearoa's most well-known brands.
You will bring a positive mindset and calm demeanor to the role as you guide and shape the strategic direction of innovative process improvement for the team.
You'll be a highly experienced professional, with a background working across multi-disciplinary teams to deliver large, high-profile, complex projects. With the ability to connect the dots across the organisation, you will identify opportunities and leverage relationships to support the delivery of our work.
It goes without saying, you'll be confident working with the Minister, the senior leadership team, and others across the Department.
We are keen to hear from you if you have the following attributes:
experience in developing strategies for complex national communications
experience working with a range of internal and external communication channels including traditional and online media, social media and digital
skills in developing and implementing effective systems to manage critical issues and risk management
good people skills. You'll be able to take people on the journey and be seen as a champion for the team and encourage professional development opportunities for direct reports
excellent writing, editing and oral communication skills, and a successful track record of building and leveraging relationships for mutually beneficial outcomes
strong understanding of Treaty partnerships and implications for organisation
- an understanding of government processes and accountabilities.
