The University of Otago is New Zealand’s 2nd largest university, with over 20,000 students and 4,000 full-time equivalent staff. Otago’s Department of Chemistry is the oldest Chemistry department in New Zealand (established in 1871) and teaches ca 450 full-time students.

The Department has a long-standing international reputation as a leader in research and education. There are currently 15 full-time academic staff, 10 administrative and technical staff, and 6 research staff including postdoctoral fellows. In addition, Plant and Food Research staff (a Crown Research Institute) work within the Department.

Our researchers are actively involved with New Zealand’s Centres for Research Excellence (CoREs): MacDiarmid Institute for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology, Dodd-Walls Centre for Photonic and Quantum Technologies, Maurice Wilkins Centre for Molecular Biodiscovery, The Riddet Institute, and Coastal People: Southern Skies.

The Department operates an open-access approach to the use of the wide range of modern equipment, including: Varian & JEOL 400, 500 & 600 MHz NMR spectrometers, a Shimadzu LCMS-9030 Q-TOF mass spectrometer, and an Agilent Supernova dual source X-ray diffractometer. The Department also has a benchtop NMR (60 MHz), FTIR, UV-vis-NIR spectrometers, fluorimeters, thermal analysis instruments (Q2000 DSC and a Q50 TGA) and a CHNS elemental analyser.

**_ The role/Te mahi_**

As an Instrument Support Technician, you will provide technical support to staff and students using analytical instrumentation, in particular, the departmental NMR and MS facilities.
- Key tasks of this role include:

- Maintaining and operating the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectrometric (ESI-MS) instruments.
- Assisting and providing technical advice to staff and students in the operation of key analytical instruments, and to meeting the needs of teaching and research programmes.
- Performing routine instrument maintenance, including the regular replenishment of cryogens.
- Liaising with staff, both internally (department, university) and externally (manufacturers, service technicians) to troubleshoot problems, ensure instruments are operating optimally, and that user data is accessible and secure.
- Ensuring a tidy, safe and healthy working environment, including the training of new instrument users.

- To be successful in this role, you will:

- Hold at least a BSc in Chemistry (a postgraduate qualification is preferred).
- Have extensive experience operating NMR and/or mass spectrometers, and a willingness to upskill where there are gaps (instrument-specific training can be arranged).
- Be technically-minded with a commitment to ensure critical instrumentation is well-maintained year-round.
- Have excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Have good communication and interpersonal skills, and a commitment to continuous improvement to best support the student and staff users of the instrumentation.
- Be highly organised, with the ability to manage multiple demands while maintaining a high level of attention to detail and safe working practices.

This is a permanent, fulltime (37.5 hours) position, located in Dunedin.
