As New Zealand's only transmission company, Transpower's role as a State-Owned Enterprise is to build, operate and maintain the National Grid. At the heart of the electricity sector, we have a unique and critical role including helping to enable and accelerate a net carbon zero future.
Transpower resolves annual transmission charges each year in accordance with the Transmission Pricing Methodology (TPM), which is a schedule of the Electricity Industry Participation Code and is governed by the Electricity Authority. Because our transmission network is a natural monopoly, our investments in grid assets and allowable revenue are regulated by the Commerce Commission.
About the team
As the demand for electricity continues to grow to meet climate change and sustainability goals, so too does the demand for the critical infrastructure and Transmission services to enable this change.
The Grid Pricing team is a small, supportive group of experts who operate and administer the grid pricing function that determines how Transpower's costs as owner and operator of the Grid (~$1B pa) are recovered from our direct customers.
The team must equally consider the interests of all our customers. This places a heavy reliance on consistency and precedent (as opposed to unregulated pricing that is much more flexible). The team is an internal gatekeeper for ensuring Transpower is kept whole (as a cost recovery business), and pricing outcomes are consistent with the guiderails of regulation.
The team ultimately supports Transpower to be a successful and commercially orientated business that works in the best long-term interests of New Zealand.
The opportunity
Based in our Waikoukou Head Office to support knowledge transfer, you will lead the delivery of Transpower's grid pricing obligations and projects for Grid Pricing, ensuring that the right systems, processes, and tools are in place to achieve compliance.
The Senior Pricing Specialist is a champion for grid pricing operational best practice with internal and external stakeholders and is a mentor providing support and expertise to other members in the Grid Pricing team. You will:

- ensure annual transmission charges are prepared to a high standard, with mínimal auditor-identified errors or changes.
- provide evidence-based recommendations and Pricing thought leadership to ensure Transpower sustains its social license to operate as a regulated monopoly business.
- provide high-quality quantitative and qualitative analysis, with strong attention to detail and problem-solving aptitude. You will help Pricing Specialists understand the “why” behind the numbers and follow their intuition to explore and explain any anomalies.
- identify, investigate, and implement on-going improvements to the pricing models & procedures.

- Proven leadership experience in the delivery of pricing obligations, and strong knowledge of Transpower's pricing obligations, and ideally, systems.
- Advanced understanding of commercial principles, including proven attention to detail when producing high-quality modelling, analysis, and data distillation.
- Influencing skills - ability to influence other teams within Transpower towards change that is cognisant of regulated pricing obligations and priorities.
- Experience in developing and mentoring staff.
- While not essential - a relevant tertiary qualification in Economics, Mathematics, or Engineering and/or equivalent experience in a related discipline is helpful, as is the ability to influence a wide range of stakeholders in a principled way that is cognisant of the intent of regulation and strategic priorities.
