Mount Hutt, New Zealand NZ Ski Limited Full time

Tuesday, 12 November 2024 Are you fuelled by a passion for the outdoors? Is there something indescribable that draws you to the mountains? Let’s chat.
Joining our crew is more than just working at aski field - it’s a lifestyle, seasonal work is a rollercoaster but it’s one that creates lasting memories that you’ll talk about for a lifetime.
Our NZSki community has been growing since 1947 and continues to offer the best experience for our crew, locals, and guests alike.
Everyone at Coronet Peak, The Remarkables and Mt Hutt cares for the mountains and shares a passion for snowsports and the surrounding regions.
Our success is due to our awesome customer service, first-class facilities, majestic scenery, and wild terrain.
We are in search of an industry professional to join us at Mt Hutt as Head of Patrol & Medical for our 2025 winter season and beyond.
Reporting to our Ski Area Manager, you will be leading a team of Patrollers, Snow Safety Officers, and Medical staff, in a fast-paced environment that presents a diverse range of challenges.
Our Head of Patrol & Medical is responsible for day-to-day operations of the department, with a focus on promoting safety and preventing hazards to reduce injuries, as well as being ready to respond effectively to any emergency situations.
Leading from the front, your role is to inspire and motivate staff members to deliver exceptional guest experiences and ensure they receive opportunities to further develop their skills and experience.
The successful applicant will successfully demonstrate their capacity to thrive in an alpine environment, prior knowledge/experience of medical rescues, and ability to lead a culturally diverse team.
This is a full-time, fixed-term, winter seasonal employment contract commencing early May and ending mid/end-October.
About the Role Our team are fun loving, hardworking and exude a passion for winter and all that it entails.
We pride ourselves on caring for our staff and our guests, operating in a safe and inclusive environment, and providing each other with support and respect whilst enjoying some awesome skiing and riding along the way.
From the outset you will be responsible for the recruitment and training of your team, with a focus on setting them up for success by ensuring expectations are clearly communicated early on.
You’ll also review our business plan, updating standard operating procedures, training manuals and hazard registers to ensure our documentation aligns to best practice.
You will also be involved in regular meetings with the Coronet Peak management team to ensure policies, procedures, and practices are well understood and consistently applied.
Day-to-day, the role of a Patroller is varied, and you’ll be leading and motivating the team, ensuring they have the skills, knowledge, and equipment to perform their duties effectively.
Overseeing our on-mountain medical room forms part of this role, and you’ll need to familiarise yourself with the day-to-day operational requirements that fall under this umbrella.
Safety is key, and your team will need to have the knowledge and confidence to report hazards, speak up and ask questions as needed.
Throughout the season you’ll oversee daily operations, set work rosters to ensure the department is adequately resourced for forecast weather conditions and visitation expectations, all whilst actively working alongside your team to ensure they are delivering a consistently safe and engaging service.
Our Patrol team are crucial to the overall success of our ski area operations and it’s vital the team are prepared every day to welcome guests and provide access to appropriate terrain.
A key challenge of this role will be managing the expectations and motivation of the team throughout the highs as well as the lows of the season.
We are therefore seeking a planner, who can lead by example, prioritise effectively, and remain calm under pressure.
If you have the attitude and desire to create a high performing team, you are an excellent communicator and you pride yourself on quality and safe work practices then we would love to hear from you.
Our ideal candidate will be an inspiring leader, with a proven can-do attitude and commitment to excellence in all aspects of their work.
Skills & Experience An in-depth understanding of snow safety (including avalanche control), trail safety and interpreting weather is essential.
Demonstrable prior experience in outdoor emergencies and hazard prevention is also required.
Ability to operate a skidoo and prior exposure to lift evacuations and helicopter rescues would be considered a distinct advantage.
Adaptable and responsive to the demands of our seasonal business and changing environment.
Dedicated, flexible and willing to take ownership of the staff and guests experience.
Be committed to learning and self-development.
Excellent customer service & communication skills and willingness to lead others in these areas.
Demonstrated ownership of Health & Safety in the workplace.
Comfortable working outside in variable conditions, and available for early shifts as required.
A large part of this role involves working outdoors on your feet all day in all types of weather, so a reasonable level of fitness is required.
A practical problem solver, able to remain calm under pressure and plan ahead.
Ability to develop effective on-going relationships with staff, guests, and other stakeholders.
Ability to develop, interpret and enforce policies.
Ability to extract, interpret and analyse data to make recommendations for ongoing improvements.
Ability to ski to an advanced level.
Qualifications National Certificate in Avalanche Risk Management – Stage 1.
Pre-hospital Emergency Care (preferred).
