The University of Otago, Wellington (UOW) provides health research and teaching in New Zealand's capital city.

It enjoys collaborative relationships with District Health Boards, local health service providers, multiple central and local government agencies such as the Ministry of Health and Wellington City Council, as well as other tertiary education providers such as Massey and Victoria University.

It also has strong links with local iwi.

The Department of Public Health at the University of Otago, Wellington offers an undergraduate fourth year medical student module and a flexible range of postgraduate study programmes on-campus in Newtown, Wellington.


_The role/Te mahi_


As a Research Fellow in the Department of Public Health, you will join a team of highly professional and dedicated staff, to investigate the connections between climate change, land use, water resources and health outcomes in New Zealand.

The position will be based within the Health, Environment & Infection Research Unit (HEIRU) at the University of Otago, Wellington.

This group has an active programme of research and public education on a range of topics 'focused on reducing the impact of infectious diseases and adverse environmental factors on population health' including diseases linked to NZ agricultural practices.


_Your skills and experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako_

  • A postgraduate degree in public health, information science, or statistics. Knowledge of spatiotemporal methods is highly desirable.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a history of research publications and other dissemination.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills.
  • A good understanding of and commitment to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and to equal opportunity.
  • A practical understanding of tikanga Māori in research.
  • A commitment to culturally safe and mana enhancing practice.
  • A commitment to Māori health workforce development.

This is a full-time (0.8 FTE), fixed term position. The position will start December 2023, and end on 29 February 2025.
The salary range for this position is $87,152 to $103,550 per annum.
