Hamilton, Waikato, New Zealand Transpower Full time
Are you a _tech savvy _people leader who loves change, continuous improvement, and the challenges of achieving better organisational outcomes?_

Transpower owns and operates the National Grid, which is at the very heart of the New Zealand economy.

We transport electricity from where it is generated to large electricity users and the distribution businesses that deliver it to homes and businesses nationwide.

There are two parts of our business: National Grid owner (looking after the assets that keep the electricity flowing) and System Operator (managing how electricity gets from the point of generation to consumers in real-time and in the future).

Both roles rely on the continued operation of our real-time SCADA systems.

About the team

The Real-Time Systems group enables Transpower to plan and manage the power system by presenting accurate and reliable operational data.

Utilising technical expertise with the equipment and systems they:

  • Undertake timely, consistent, and accurate updates to National SCADA configurations (including Substation Management (SMS) and Remote Engineering Access (REA) systems), models and displays in response to changes in the transmission network.
  • Undertake technical investigations; as well as defining and delivering improvement recommendations.
  • Ensure the 24x7 operational availability of National SCADA and associated remote systems.

With the increasing advances in operational technology, and the increasing reliance on automation and ICT toolsets, the group works collaboratively with teams and stakeholders across Transpower.

Examples of this work include an Automation Roadmap, and Telemetry User Data Specification project - a project to improve the data for users in the project - as highlights.

This cross-enterprise work will only continue to increase.

About the Opportunity - due to lateral promotion

Based in Wellington or Hamilton, as a member of the Information Services and Technology leadership team, you'll lead a National operational engineering team (4 direct reports, and a total team of 34).

The group encompasses Faults, Minor Change and Maintenance, Projects, Planning and Engineering Practices with employees located in Wellington, Hamilton, Christchurch, and Palmerston.

All transmission projects involve some form of configuration changes and enhancements to the National SCADA and associated remote systems. With forecasted growth in work of 40%, the opportunity exists to further streamline processes.

The Real Time Systems area connects across the whole of the Transpower business with stakeholders in project delivery, grid maintenance, asset investment and operational technologies within IST.

If you like variety, problem solving, strategic thinking, connecting with people and ability to make a difference, then this is the role for you.

What will you bring

You'll have demonstrated experience in leading and coaching both people managers and team members within a changing technical, or operational environment.

Experience mapping strategy to business outcomes and change initiatives to guide investment decisions, will enable you to pick up an exciting programme of work and join us to help deliver a net carbon zero future, through technology evolution and innovation.

Your CV and cover letter will clearly demonstrate

  • A relevant tertiary qualification or related business management qualification/equivalent experience and 5+ years' experience leading a technical team/s.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to communicate complex technical issues to nontechnical audiences.
  • Demonstrable relationship management skills at all levels including advocacy and influencing of key stakeholders, in an environment ideally with large scale assets/infrastructure and commercial tension and risk.
  • A successful trackrecord of process improvement in a technical context.
  • Proven financial and commercial acuity including having held budget responsibility for capital and operational expenditure.
While not essential a general understanding of the nature and design of the electricity industry is an advantage

Why join us at Transpower
Aotearoa is powered by the people who work here. Every home, every marae, every electric vehicle, every hospital relies on the electricity we manage and deliver.

This is your opportunity to join us on a mission that affects all New Zealanders, every day and long into the future.
