About the role

New Zealand Police is the lead agency responsible for reducing crime and enhancing community safety.

We work in partnership with individuals, communities, businesses and other public sector agencies to achieve our vision of Safer Communities Together.


This position sits within the Iwi & Community Group which is responsible for fostering and enabling iwi and community partnerships and prevention.

This is achieved through leading the development of strategies and initiatives to reduce crime and harm, including those that are co-designed with communities to deliver positive outcomes.

Iwi & Community provides cultural and prevention-focused leadership and advice to better enable Police to work with a broad range of communities to deliver shared outcomes.


This position leads the Māori Cultural and Strategic Advisor team, which is responsible for supporting Police National Headquarters, Service Centres and Districts (MRM network) to strengthen partnerships with hapü / iwi, Crown agencies and service providers.

Supports Police to develop its strategic and operational capability to meet its commitment to Māori communities and ensure alignment with 'Our Values' of 'Commitment to Māori and Te Tiriti' and 'Valuing Diversity'.

The team will work closely with the Pacific and Ethnic partnerships teams.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Lead, build, and maintain strong and effective working relationships with community leaders on a national basis across the portfolio.
  • Develop, Lead, and manage a team to deliver on policy, guidelines and the National Strategies associated to enhancing the thread of Te Ao Māori through Our Business
  • Provide clear and concise reports and briefings and an understanding of working at a national level
  • Analyze and understand complex issues relating to Te Ao Māori and the Treaty of Waitangi

  • Proven experience of productive engagement with various stakeholder partners of our business in particular Iwi, NGO & Government Agencies
  • A strong willingness and desire to develop a high performing team that will deliver on our business
  • Confidence and ability to effectively navigate in Te Ao Māori
  • Ideally demonstrable experience leading at a national level
  • Broad experience of operational policing especially in Prevention; Family Harm, Rangatahi, Community & Youth


This role is set at Leader/Manager level, this means your key purpose is "to lead tactics for Our Business and enable people to deliver them".
