We are actively looking for a highly skilled and forward-thinking Principal Architect to join our dynamic team and lead some of Aotearoa New Zealand's iconic projects, including the Interislander Resilient Connection (iReX) and rail transformation projects.

This role will also involve working across various domains, including marine, land environments, civil and virtual engineering, as well as rail and road projects.


The purpose of the Principal Architect role is to engage with the business to translate business strategy into technology roadmaps, and design and maintain KiwiRail's digital architecture to ensure solutions are aligned with KiwiRail's technology strategy.

The Principal Architect is a key touchpoint with the business, translating technical information for non-technical stakeholders to ensure understanding, and driving engagement through the discover, describe, and deliver phases of technology initiatives and projects.

As the Principal Architect you will provide support to the Architecture Manager to ensure that a holistic enterprise-wide perspective is applied to architecture design, optimised technology decisions are made, and appropriate end-to-end solutions are delivered to meet business needs.

Critical to the success of this role is the ability to engage, cultivate and maintain effective working relationships across a wide variety of business and technical stakeholders.

You will have experience as a Principal Architect within a complex Enterprise.

Throughout your career you have developed knowledge in the following key areas:

  • At least 10+ years' experience in a complex, large scale IT environment.
  • 3+ years' experience working in the capacity of a Senior IT Architect (Enterprise Architect, Lead Architect ) or equivalent in complex, large scale IT Environment.
  • Leadership experience and influencing senior level management and key stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of all components of holistic digital architecture, business reengineering principles and processes, and basic knowledge of financial models and budgeting
  • Ability to translate technical language and concepts into 'plain English' for nontechnical audiences to ensure understanding.
  • A customer centric mindset, focused on understanding and engaging customers and delivering the service experience.
  • Strong commercial acumen understands business challenges to align technology strategy with business goals.
  • Strong relationship, communication and influencing skills, with demonstrated ability of building relationships, influencing collaboratively, and engaging with Executives, Customers, vendors, partners and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and take a lead role with other industry leaders and stakeholders, building effective relationships and creating strong networks and partnerships.
