He angitūtanga | About the role

This Treaty Ranger/Project Manager role is designed to strengthen Treaty partnerships and support work to meet settlement commitments across the DOC Maniapoto district.

You will be responsible for leading and maintaining iwi relationships, facilitating iwi engagement in statutory and business planning processes, delivering iwi-based projects, and reporting.

You have the opportunity to work in both the DOC office and Te Nehenehenui office. You will also be responsible for supporting the implementation of 'Whaia ki a Tata' at the district level.

This is a strategic plan that seeks to improve HWT's regional ability to give effect to the principles of Te Tiriti and work effectively alongside whānau, hapū and iwi.


The position will be focussed on:

  • supporting the roll-out of work scheduling and reporting for Treaty settlement commitments
- being able to have a working understanding of the relationship agreement been Maniapoto iwi and the crown
- supporting the implementation of the 'Whaia ki a Tata' district strategic plan
- facilitating coordination of regular meetings with whānau, hapū and iwi
- having a good understanding of the decision making framework around concessions
- supporting opportunities for whānau, hapū and iwi to build their internal capabilities to practise their responsibilities as kaitiaki
- keeping up to date with the iwi landscape in Maniapoto and ensuring this information is shared with the Operations team
- supporting staff in the DOC Maniapoto district to increase their cultural competency.

We are looking for a natural people leader who is passionate about supporting a positive team culture. You will have great communication and engagement skills, as well as a heightened sense of self-awareness and emotional intelligence.

You will have a strong understanding of te ao Māori, allowing you to engage and work effectively with whānau, hapū, and iwi.

The iwi landscape in this district is complex with 7 treaty settlements (with overlapping rights and interests), and multiple hapū.

Iwi are key players and drivers in conservation; DOC is reliant on having a person with excellent knowledge of the Treaty landscape to effectively deliver on our settlement commitments and support work to embed DOC's integrated strategy to become an honourable Treaty partner.

The salary range for this position is $73,336 to $93,708 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.

Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory - this includes holding a valid work visa that covers the whole period of employment.
