  • We currently have a vacancy for a full time Kaihāpai / Cultural Liaison. Working in partnership with our Te Puna Oranga Māori Health services, the purpose of the position is to provide cultural support for patients and their whanau from the time of entry and duration of their stay in the Intensive Care Unit. This new exciting opportunity is fixed term pilot position and will be evaluated during and upon its conclusion.

Mō tō mātou rōpū - About our team

  • Our 16 bedded Intensive Care Unit (ICU) cares for both elective and acute patients. The unit is state of the art, and provides an excellent opportunity to work in a progressive and motivated environment with the latest technology. We are at the centre of a regional referral network across the middle of the North Island, with all the related trauma and air retrieval activities that go along with that. The medical and nursing teams are supportive, dynamic and flexible, working together to provide quality care to all patients within Te Manawa Taki.

Moū - About you

  • You will have a strong understanding and a strong knowledge of Tikanga and Te Ao Māori with practical ability to convey and teach to all clients and staff through different means such as but not limited to Te Reo and Waiata. With the ability to support access to cultural programmes and activities for clients and their whānau. Provide support for staff in order to enhance the effectiveness of the cultural plans and activities.

Your skills and experience will ideally be:

Essential:

  • A relevant graduate qualification
  • Experience in implementing Te Tiriti o Waitangi in action
  • Passion for working with whanau Māori
  • Extensive networks and relationships with services, Māori and the wider community
  • You will likely have significant existing networks within a Māori health environment in order to have the required credibility to further build and maintain positive relationships at all levels
  • A commitment to achieving equitable outcomes for Māori
  • Māori / Pacific cultural competency.
  • Experience in engaging with Māori / Pacific patients and families in a healthcare service.
  • Good understanding of the unit's functions, and the processes and services within it.
  • A commitment to achieving equitable outcomes for Māori people
  • Comprehensive understanding of Māori worldviews.
  • Good relationships with Māori cultural networks and services

Desired:

  • Post graduate study/qualification in relevant area of practice
  • Robust knowledge of community agencies and networks
  • Level 3 Health related NZQA qualification is desirable
  • Previous experience working in Māori health services and/or with Māori
  • Experience in quality improvement initiatives
