We are seeking a suitably qualified charge nurse manager (CNM) to join the Puawai Community Forensic Service, managing the prison and court liaison teams.

The CNM will be responsible for leading a multidisciplinary team including medical staff in the delivery of services in the prisons and district court rooms across the midland region, where Maori are significantly over represented across the wider Justice sector.

Mō tātou Ratonga | About our Service


Puawai provides regional forensic psychiatric services to the Midland health region, covering the courts, prisons, acute and community forensic services.

The services provided by Puawai include;
- a secure inpatient service of 50 beds based in Hamilton (in the Henry Rongomau Bennett Centre) and;
- a community forensic service that includes services to the prisons and courts in the region, as well as community mental health follow up to community-based forensic service users living in Hamilton.


The forensic service is based in Hamilton but operates an outreach service to the other areas, including court liaison nurses based in both Bay of Plenty and New Plymouth.

There is a strong focus on interagency relationship development with core external agencies and teams including,

  • Ara Poutama, Department of Corrections
  • District Courts across the midland region
  • Lakes, Bay of Plenty and Taranaki regions

Your relationship management skills will be exceptional and you will have a proven track record of being able to bring people and agencies together to improve health outcomes and reduce Maori inequity in key areas.

You will be motivated to achieve great results, have the ability to make tough decisions when necessary, as well as display initiative and resourcefulness that will allow you to navigate the variety of challenges you could face

We are looking for someone who has:

  • A passion for working in the mental health sector
  • Leadership and management skills
  • Selfmanagement skills; with the ability to lead change and business as usual service delivery
  • A focus on continuous quality improvement
  • The ability to work effectively within a team
  • Change management experience and skills
  • Excellent skills as a role model, is selfmotivated and highly organised
  • The ability to work autonomously and provide a high quality service to service users/ tangata whaiora
Applicants must have registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand and hold a full, clean drivers licence.
