UGL's Manufacturing & Maintenance business have been awarded a follow-on contract for the supply of 450 Container Flat Top wagons to KiwiRail.

This order will complement the existing UGL designed 40ft (IPA), 50ft (IL) & 60ft (FIB) wagons recently delivered to KiwiRail and servicing both the North & South Islands.

UGL have partnered with KiwiRail to support local employment opportunities by completing the final assembly of the wagons in Dunedin NZ, with ongoing orders currently in the pipeline.

As such, we are on the search for an experienced

Production Liaison Technician to join our high performing team, based at the newly built KiwiRail Hillside Depot.

About your role
Reporting to the

_Project Manager_, you will be the first point of contact for any issues with the delivery, assembly, and commissioning of the wagons prior to handover to our customer.

The role will provide day-to-day overview and resolution of technical problems encountered by the production line and assist Hillside team with fault detection and rectification measures.


Key responsibilities will include:

  • Work closely with management and production teams to provide prompt and effective responses to emergent issues
  • Communicate and coordinate with relevant KiwiRail Hillside & UGL personnel on fault finding and troubleshooting supplied equipment or wagon underframe problems during production
  • Support with training and instruct production teams with corrective actions and
  • Provide technical knowledge to operation crews and operational planning
  • Record and maintain a log of any issues & notifications

About you
As the

Production Liaison Technician, you will have demonstrated experience in a heavy maintenance Engineering environment. Experience gained in the rail, automotive, military, Defence, avionics or any other safety critical environment is essential.

Other skills & experience required:

  • Rollingstock manufacturing, maintenance and/or commissioning
  • Ability to read technical drawings, schematics, field modifications (FMI) and bill of material lists
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve mechanical, pneumatic and quality problems
  • Strong communication skills (oral & written) including strong negotiation and influencing skills and the ability to establish effective working relationships with a variety of people at different levels both internally and externally
  • Qualifications / Certifications_
  • Trade level certification or an equivalent Engineering qualifications
  • Certificate in Training & Assessment or equivalent
