_What is Gastroenterology?_

Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the stomach, small and large bowel and the pancreas.

Such disorders include:

  • Inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis and IBD unclassified)
  • Intestinal failure & intravenous nutrition (IVN) dependence (sometimes called TPN dependence)
  • Coeliac disease
  • Complicated gastrooesophageal reflux
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Children with a risk of familial bowel cancer (eg. polyposis syndromes)
An opportunity has risen for a Nurse Specialist in the IBD Portfolio with Starship Child Health.

Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) are chronic inflammatory conditions of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and comprise two main types - Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis.

Over the past decades IBD has become increasingly common around the world. CD,this new portfolio will design the delivery of the nursing service and meet the demand of our communities.

IBD in children differs greatly from adult onset disease in many ways, including disease location and patterns. Children and adolescents with IBD should be managed in a child-friendly setting by staff experienced in paediatric IBD.

The Nurse Specialist is an expert in assessment skills, diagnostic reasoning, knowledge of management options and monitoring underpin practice. This role has specialist knowledge of complex conditions which is central to the role. Case management and coordination of the patient and their whānau with health professionals and inpatient areas is integral.
