Āu Mahi | What You Will Do

As part of the research project "Into the Deep: Analysing the Actors and Controversies Driving the Adoption of the World's First Deep Sea Mining Governance", we have an exciting opportunity for a
Postdoctoral fellow to join an interdisciplinary research team in the Department of Political Science and International Relations (POLS) and the Macmillan Brown Centre for Pacific Studies - University of Canterbury, New Zealand.

You will work under the direct supervision of the team leader, Associate Professor Pascale Hatcher and you will be an integral part of the research team:

contributing to the collection and the analysis of data, dissemination of the research results and providing technical and administrative support for the project.

Specifically, the project looks at the world's first Deep Sea Mining (DSM) operations and their ramification for the Pacific Island Countries (PICs).

While economically appealing, the prospect of DSM in the region remains divisive.

The future of DSM will play out in the adoption of DSM-specific governance regimes in the PICs which could leave these countries' environments and societies vulnerable to foreign-led exploitive extractivism.

The project involves both digital and fieldwork methods and provides a mapping and analysis of actors and controversies relating to DSM debates and how these influence the development of DSM governance in the PICs and what lessons can be drawn for local communities and international stakeholders.

The position is fully funded and full time. It is a two year fixed contract (mid-2023 to mid-2025).

Mōu | Who You Are

We are looking for someone with excellent interpersonal, intercultural, research, and organisational skills, as well as experience in doing research in extractive industries in the Global South.

Specific expertise in the Pacific Island Countries and mining is an asset.

In addition, we are interested in someone who enjoys working in a multidisciplinary team and is passionate about social justice issues around mining and development.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Demonstrated academic ability in an area relevant to the research project
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well in a multidisciplinary and multicultural team
  • Demonstrated ability to complete tasks to ensure project success
  • Proficiency in English (written and oral)
  • Skills related to digital methods (e.g. computerassisted text analysis, network analysis, data wrangling skills, proficiency with relevant software) and/or an interest and aptitude to develop skills in digital research methods.
