Mō mātou | About us

Te Whatu Ora, Health New Zealand, leads the day-to-day running of our health system across New Zealand, with functions delivered at local, district, regional and national levels.

It weaves the functions of the 20 former District Health Boards into its regional divisions and district offices, ensuring continuity of services in the health system.

Here in Waitaha, Canterbury we deliver health services to the almost 600,000 people that live in the Canterbury region.

We are committed to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its principles by ensuring our partnership with Māori are at the forefront of all our conversations.

The Team

The Emergency Department, Waipapa, is one of the busiest in Australasia and sees approximately 105,000 patients per annum, of which 42% are admitted.

The department has accreditation for advanced training in Emergency Medicine for 2 years by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine, and is renowned as a - Finishing school - for Advanced Trainees, Fellows and new Consultants.

There is a menu of subspecialty fellow positions available including: Hyperbaric and Dive Medicine, Ultrasound, Medical Education and Simulation, Administration and Health Pathway development, Research, Toxicology, Health Informatics and Palliative Care.

We are the only ED in New Zealand to offer such an extensive range of supported fellowships.
Christchurch is a thriving city with a regional population of 520,000. Post-earthquakes (10 years ago) it has undergone a rebuild with excellent new developments and entertainment centres.

Life style here is one of the main attractions.
