Āu Mahi | What You Will Do
Interested in climate change adaptation? Risk analysis, communication, decision making, social and cultural impacts?

We are an interdisciplinary research team at the University of Canterbury.

We work on climate change adaptation, natural hazard mitigation, and urban planning answering the question of how we design resilient, sustainable, healthy, and just communities.

We work closely with iwi, councils, and central government, to develop leading approaches to tackling climate challenges, considering the impacts across the wellbeing domains and the interconnections between these issues.

The results will be used by urban planners, policymakers, and emergency managers in Aotearoa New Zealand and abroad as we adapt our communities to the impacts of climate change.

We are currently looking for a postdoctoral research fellow for a fixed term position of 1 year, with the potential to extend up to 3.5 years.

We have a fun and diverse team, all passionate about our work.

In your role, you would be leading one of our key projects in one of the regions of the South Island of New Zealand, supporting their adaptation planning and leading related community engagement.

This would involve placements in the region of several months at a time.

The goal of this project is to develop an adaptation planning methodology that leverages the latest research findings and risk assessment techniques to support communities making decisions today.
It would involve the following research objectives:

  • Development of an adaptation planning methodology that leverages the detailed risk assessment across multiple hazards and domains
  • An engagement strategy to communicate the risk information and adaptation options, and gathers the information necessary to enable adaptation planning
  • Develop multiobjective testing for potential adaptation interventions
  • Devise an adaptation plan for the district as a case study of the framework. Evaluate the efficacy and strengths and weaknesses of the framework.

Additionally, you would be involved with the other research in the team and would provide support to the PI, including advising the PhD students.

The ongoing projects include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing risk assessment methodologies to understand risk to people, communities, and Māori
  • Developing risk assessment methodologies to understand risk to natural environments and habitats
  • Developing risk communication techniques and support councils with community engagement
  • Developing decisionmaking under uncertainty techniques and models to support longterm adaptation planning
  • Evaluating adaptation interventions in a manner that considers cascading impacts.

Mōu | Who You Are
To be successful in this position you will ideally have the following:

  • A PhD in science, arts, engineering, or a related discipline
  • Strong quantitative and data analysis skills
  • A publication track record as well as experience with preparation and delivery of quality oral presentations to a wide range of audiences
  • A proven ability to communicate complex ideas and concepts (both orally and in writing) to a wide variety or groups
  • The ability to work creatively and independently.
