The Strategy and Capability team leads the development of strategies and frameworks to build Ministry capability in te ao Māori.

The team is responsible for the delivery of Te Ngira Kāpehu, an organisational change approach to improving te ao Māori capability (people, processes, and practice) across the Ministry of Justice.

It is also responsible for the delivery of Te Whaiao, the Ministry's Māori Outcomes Framework, which ensures that action and investment across the Ministry will deliver on meaningful shifts for Māori that can be measured.

The Principal Advisor, Strategy and Capability, will lead the development of high quality, mātauranga based advice across the team.

You will provide thought leadership, expert advice and guidance that builds capability in te ao Māori for everyone who works for the Ministry, to support the Ministry to honour its Te Tiriti obligations and partner with iwi Māori to deliver Services.

Your strategic leadership and understanding of public sector systems and processes will help drive the strategy and te ao Māori capability functions of Ātea a Rangi to enable Ministry-wide shifts to improve justice outcomes for whānau, hapū and iwi Māori.


Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and Experience
A relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent knowledge, skills, and experience and a demonstrable commitment to ongoing professional development. This may include Māori Studies, Social Sciences, Arts or Law. Equivalent life experience will be considered.

  • Competence in Te Reo Māori me ōna tikanga
  • Experience in working with Māori groups and organisations
  • Experience in providing intellectual and professional leadership in the public sector and/or
demonstrable experience in a relevant field.

  • Understanding of Public sector systems and processes, including accountability requirements
and the use of performance information to inform decision-making.

  • Experience in communicating with a wide range of audiences on a range of complex issues.
to address matters that affect Māori

  • A strong ability to communicate information clearly and concisely (both in oral and written
format) appropriate to the target audience

  • Comfortable dealing with ambiguity and confident in providing advice based on incomplete
information

  • Ability to act in management roles when required

Utu ā-tau/Salary**The appointing salary for this role will be between $124,397 and $173,973 based on skills and experience.
