The Role and Opportunity
- AgResearch is looking for enthusiastic and dedicated students to join us for a Summer Internship program. These are aimed at students who are currently undertaking tertiary study and will run from 20 November 2023 until 9 February 2024. This is an exciting opportunity for you to experience what your professional career at a Crown Research Institute could be like to gain exposure to the Science community, developing skills, and creating connections that will set you up for a bright career.
- This role will be based in Palmerston North.
The Project
- We have E. coli DNA preps taken from several freshwater sites from around New Zealand as part of an Our Land & Water project. The project has a 3month Pūhoro summer internship costed in. The tauira will be able to use PCR to subtype E. coli for subsequent high resolution genetic analysis. Some fieldwork will also occur near the source of the Manawatū River. This is a culturally sensitive site and our sampling is undertaken as part of a broader initiative with farmers and local hapū who are collaboratively undertaking riparian planting to enhance the mauri of the awa. Field work will include the collection of water, soil, sediment, biofilm and faecal samples from the ngahere, whenua and awa.
- Lab based activities will include microbiology, molecular biology (PCR), microbial water quality assessments, and processing environmental samples
- Key tasks will include, microbiology, molecular biology (PCR polymerase chain reaction), agarose gel electrophoresis, database curation, and processing environmental samples
Your Ideal BackgroundCurrently undertaking a relevant tertiary course, preferably within a biological sciences degree where some microbiology, molecular biology studies have been undertaken, and ideally some undergraduate lab experience
- Be able to commit to working from Nov '2
- Feb '24 (excluding our Christmas closedown period)
- A keen attitude and motivation to work in an innovative environment
- Demonstrates safe workplace behaviour by taking all practicable steps to ensure own and other's safety in the workplace
