Transpower has a dual role as New Zealand's owner and system operator of the National Grid.

As the transmission network asset owner, we keep the energy flowing - transporting high voltage electricity from where it is generated to cities, towns, and some major industrial users nationwide.

As System Operator, we operate the electricity market and power system 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.


A lifeline utility and essential service, we currently employ over 800 people nationwide, with an extended Service Providers whānau of over 3,000 who deliver the construction, maintenance, and fault response on the National Grid.

With accelerating demand for electrification to meet climate change goals, our organisation will continue to scale. It's critical the efficient and effective procurement of goods and services enables us to support New Zealand to decarbonise.

About the team


Within Procurement and Supply, our Category Management team, led by the Strategic Procurement Manager, are responsible for the sustained delivery of benefits by developing category strategies, strategic sourcing and execution, ongoing performance management, category, and demand management, commercial contract management, and supplier relationship management across each of our category areas.


About this 2-year fixed term opportunity


You'll join a team of eight collaborative experienced Category Managers working across different categories including an existing Senior Category Manager Information Services and Technology who has been seconded on a critical major project for several years resulting in this vacancy.

This is a varied role with no two days the same, providing you lots of opportunity to learn about our exciting sector and make a commercial impact

You will:

  • Engage and work closely with ICT stakeholders and the broader team of over 150
  • Conduct and review ICT supply market assessments and develop and review ICT sourcing strategies
  • Support project managers and the IT senior leadership team in best practice sourcing
  • Run tender and evaluation processes for ICT products and services
  • Lead ICT supplier negotiations and implementation of contracts
  • Manage the performance of key suppliers and subcontractors
  • Track internal compliance to preferred suppliers and processes, and manage risk
  • Liaise with ICT senior leaders to manage an ongoing Information Services and Technology Category workplan
  • Provide support/cover for the seconded Category Manager, including on our major project TransGO

What will you bring?
Your experience to date CV and cover letter will clearly display:

  • 7+ years commercial experience in a complex medium to large organisation, including in an ICT procurement role that encompasses the negotiation of deals (category specific & generic). You'll have worked across procurement of not only cloud-based solutions but a broad spectrum of ICT and telecommunications procurement.
  • The ability to develop ICT procurement strategies and associated delivery programs demonstrating good expertise in identifying sources of value for your customers (we love seeing metrics and measures)
  • Deep experience developing supply sources, prequalifying vendors and performing due diligence activities, including risk identification & mitigation. You will have facilitated brainstorming and workshop sessions to develop and test hypotheses and the proposed approach.
  • Experience leading completion of project activities against the project workplan, including weekly update reports for distribution and presentation in meetings
  • Highly effective relationship management, communication, advocacy, and influencing at all levels, including proven ability to facilitate change and broker solutions
