Mō te tūnga | About the role
You will be providing expert training, certification and guidance regarding hazardous substances to New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) personnel.

This is an important role to ensure that hazardous substances safety and compliance processes are current and adhere with, to protect our people, equipment and country.


A typical day could may include:

  • Undertaking inspections, assessment, certifications, enforcement, mediation and training functions that ensure the NZDF remains safe and compliant with its duties and legislative obligations;
  • Delivering hazardous substances training and monitoring of assessment programmes;
  • Providing policy and regulatory advice;
  • Contributing to the annual hazardous substances reporting process, monthly reporting and other management reports as required.
Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and Experience

You require an in-depth knowledge of hazardous substances, and are able to translate technical knowledge into accessible information to ensure understanding at all levels of the NZDF.

This will be achieved through your well-developed interpersonal skills, proven effective research competency, and written and audio-visual presentation skills.

Ideally, you will also have:

  • Extensive experience in the use, control and regulation of Class 9 hazardous substances;
  • Experience in providing robust hazardous substances training, and ideally in Certification and assessments;
  • Proven experience operating within a large multifaceted or complex business environment with multiple stakeholder expectations; and
  • Able to work effectively on your own, as well as part of a group.

Please note:

You must be able to travel regularly to NZDF camps and bases, so a Class 1 drivers' licence is required.

Defence Logistics Command (DLC) supports the NZDF by providing logistics (maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO)), supply chain and warehousing operations, and shared services to the single Services and HQ Joint Forces NZ.

DLC provides logistics policy and advice internally to the NZDF and externally to NZDF's stakeholders on an All of Government (AoG) basis.

DLC is responsible for multi-national logistics policy and implementation through a series of bi-lateral and multilateral agreements and forums.

DLC necessarily maintains close relations with Ministry of Defence (MOD), Capability Branch, NZDF Finance, Overseas Procurement Offices, Overseas Equipment Manufacturers, New Zealand based industry goods and services providers, and other New Zealand Government Agencies.

Higher level Security Clearance
- most preferably a NZ citizen who has resided continuously in this country for the last 10 years, OR
- is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last 10 years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, UK or the USA; and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZSIS towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at a higher level.
