The office of Te Pou Ohumahi Mātauranga/Education Workforce delivers advice and materials to a wide range of senior stakeholders that include Ministers, the Office of the Secretary, other Ministry groups and the education sector.

The Ministry is working through a substantial change process, and as such the environment is fast-paced and will lead to considerable positive change to the education system.

The Director will work closely with and support the Hautū (Deputy Secretary) and senior leadership team of this group. The position will be one of enabling, engaging, connecting, influencing and good decision-making.

The Director will lead a team and will work in collaboration with Group general managers to ensure the delivery of accurate information and reporting.


To be effective in this key position, you will operate at a senior leadership level with a sound understanding of Government.

You will enjoy working with complexity and be agile and adaptable, responding to competing demands. You must be strategic and systems-thinking and have the ability to connect dots. You will enjoy leading a diverse team and ideally have some background in education.

You will demonstrate knowledge, or a willingness to gain an understanding, of te ao Māori and promote tikanga and te reo Māori.

You will also have knowledge, or a willingness to gain an appreciation, of Te Tiriti o Waitangi as it applies in the public sector.
