We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced senior lawyer with high levels of integrity and professionalism to join our supportive and collegial team, in providing quality legal services for the Ministry of Social Development.
What you'll be doing | He aha tāu e mahi anaThe Ministry of Social Development (MSD) is involved in supporting New Zealanders through income and housing support, wage subsidy and employment supports.
The focus of this Senior Lawyer role is to advise on Ministry related litigation. This includes social security High Court appeals, judicial reviews, civil claims, and Human Rights and Privacy proceedings. It may also involve the resolution of complex social security issues and Historic Claims related work.It involves working closely with Crown Law and internal client groups and developing and training lawyers allocated to this work.
This role does not generally include Court advocacy as Crown Law is instructed, but familiarity with court processes and litigation management is desirable.
Government legal team experience, experience training and developing lawyers, in depth knowledge of Welfare Law, Privacy, OIA, Bill of Rights and Treaty of Waitangi are also desirable.
In MSD Legal, working across teams is expected and Senior Lawyers are encouraged to develop expertise in the Ministry's broader legal work.

- can coach, mentor, and develop Lawyers
- has experience in a broad range of legal areas and public service
- provides clear legal advice on complex issues
- enjoys working collaboratively and has excellent relationship building skills
- has a current practicing certificate or the ability to immediately obtain one and we would prefer at least 5 years PQE

Position Description
The Senior Lawyer role has a salary range of $117,349 to $146,034 dependent on experience.
