Mō tēnei tūranga | About this role
Provide specialist advice and guidance to support the Ministry's sustainability journey to reduce carbon emissions by 2025 and 2030.

Contribute to the development of the sustainability function for the Ministry to achieve the government's expectations as set out in the Carbon Neutral Government Programme (CNGP) and the Ministry's own sustainability strategy.


As the Advisor - Sustainability, you will:

  • Support the Ministry to maintain a robust understanding of environmental, social, cultural, and economic factors that impact on the Ministry's ability to sustainably operate now and in the future
  • Support the development of appropriate management processes, policies and measurement tools that help the Ministry to appropriately manage and deliver on the government's Carbon
  • Neutral Government Programme (CNGP) expectations and the Ministry's sustainability objectives
  • Contribute to the submission of documents and advice as required by the CNGP
  • Support the delivery of initiatives and key programmes identified as part of our sustainability strategy such as carbon inventory measurement, carbon emissions target setting and planning as well as climate risk management projects
  • Participate in projects across the Ministry that support the delivery of our sustainability strategy and projects
  • Build trust when working with key stakeholders to support decision making and sustain improvement and change and maintain an open and responsive relationship with key stakeholder

Mōhou ake | About you
To be successful in this role you will have the following experience, capabilities and competencies:

  • Tertiary qualification preferably in the fields of environmental science, planning, engineering, law, economics, accounting, business and commerce
  • Carbon emissions accounting and reporting along with a proven ability to use data and insights to identify trends, risks and opportunities, to influence and guide organisational and system level decision making
  • Experience in a complex organisation and in building relationships and partnerships to achieve shared outcomes along with a track record of leading, coaching and mentoring others to achieve outcomes
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to use different Ministry technology and tools to communicate with stakeholders across the Ministry
  • Ability and desire to recognise and seize opportunities to improve on the organisation's performance
  • Strong time management and organisational skills, attention to detail, along with good documentation skills


You will demonstrate knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an understanding of Te Ao Māori and promote tikanga and Te Reo Māori.

You will also have knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an appreciation of te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) as it applies in the public sector.
