We have an ambitious work programme, including reviewing our Regional Policy Statement, Land and Water Plan and Coastal Environment Plan to achieve national direction and deliver an integrated Ki Uta Ki Tai Plan in partnership with Ngāi Tahu as mana whenua of Waitaha.


Kōrero mō te tūranga | About the role:
As the Principal Strategy Advisor, you'll drive the development of kaupapa Māori policy advice for the organisation.

Your advice will enable us to give effect to national policy requirements and provide strategic policy leadership across all Council functions.


This is a unique opportunity to be part of something new and exciting - to share your talents and experience to ensure a Ngāi Tahu perspective is applied to environmental management and support functions in Waitaha Canterbury.


You'll lead the development and provision of high-quality strategic policy advice in response to national policy direction and aligned with the values and expectations of mana whenua.

This will include providing strategic, operational and tactical oversight across kaupapa Māori provisions of relevant resource management legislation and particularly the National Policy Statement on Freshwater Management (NPS-FM).

You'll have a strong understanding of, or be actively increasing your capability in, te reo me ōna tikanga Māori. You'll be a confident communicator, exercise diplomacy and discretion and be at ease persuading and influencing outcomes.

You're driven, can work independently, and love to achieve targets and goals.


Overall, you will be driven to make a difference, excited about the work we do and think you would fit well with our culture, values, and busy team.


More about you:

  • At least eight years' demonstrated experience in ngā kaupapa Māori policy development and resource management.
  • Experience working with Ngāi Tahu, and/or an active commitment to upholding the values, tikanga, kawa and traditions as guided by mana whenua, Ngāi Tahu. A commitment to honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi and experience incorporating whānau, hapū and iwi Māori perspectives into work programmes.
  • Strong networking, influencing and relationship building skills are critical to this role along with a proven ability to bring together diverse groups with multiple stakeholders in complex or sensitive situations to reach desired conclusions and outcomes.
  • Demonstrated strong quantitative and qualitative analytical skills and problemsolving abilities.
  • Strong written skills and experience in providing advice in plain English.
