Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunityWe have an opportunity for a Principal Advisor to join our Regulatory Standards and Guidance team.

This is a key role for influencing our vital part of the regulatory framework; the creation and review of regulatory standards and guidance material that truly meet their intended purpose for the people using them.

As Principal Advisor you will coach the team members, improve our processes and bring quality reviews of the teams work.

You will enable us to ensure we are working on the most important things, are collaborative, bringing in the right people and expertise where needed and are true to legislative settings.

You will play a key role in building and maintaining team competency as we all seek to exhibit the values and behaviours required for our success and alignment with Tū ake tū māiaKo koe tēnei | About youWe are looking for someone who has proven experience in a similar setting and has a passion for shaping and creating good standards and guidance to positively influence the outcomes of the transport system.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • Proven experience in coaching, influencing and building credibility across a range of stakeholders
  • Experience of genuine collaboration, considering a range of views and bringing others along on a journey
  • Demonstrated ability to translate legislation into fit for purpose standards and guidance
  • Experience in use and development, writing or review of standards and guidance (or other regulatory documentation)
  • Proven situational and organisational nous
  • Excellent riskbased decision making
  • Ability to think at a national and system wide level and translate into future focused deliverables


You will demonstrate knowledge of, or a willingness to learn Te Ao Māori and tikanga as well as to build your competency in Te Reo Māori.

You will also have knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an appreciation of te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) as it applies in the public sector.

Ko wai mātou | About usThe Regulatory Standards and Guidance teams' role (within the wider Regulatory System Design team) is to develop and review regulatory land transport standards and guidance material with a view to ensuring it is fit for purpose.

The team members review and write standards and guidance in partnership and collaboration with their wider group colleagues as well as industry and our operational teams.

The team members are facilitators who know who to bring in when to achieve the right outcome and regulatory impact with respect to standards and guidance.

Guided by risk and intelligence, the team uses the wider group prioritised work programme and processes to create new and improve current documents.

The team will work closely with the Regulatory Implementation and Regulatory Technical teams to review existing standards and
also translate new legislative settings into simple and effective documents.

While the members may have areas of interest and expertise, this is a generalist team that can pick up any land transport regulatory document and facilitate a process that ensures the final document is fit for purpose.
