Te whiwhinga mahi | The Opportunity

We have an important role in supporting the Crown in its relationships with Māori under Te Tiriti o Waitangi | The Treaty of Waitangi.

The government is committed to improving services and outcomes for Māori and strengthening the Crown's relationships with Māori.

We are responsible for designing community-based systems of care, agreeing health and wellbeing plans, executing those plans, and monitoring outcomes which then feed into the design process.

We work in partnership with our Te Whatu Ora colleagues to shape system-wide public health services across the motu.

The Regional Manager, Rural Health leads the life course team that oversees and implements the service planning and integration of rural health services across Te Wai Pounamu.

This includes oversight of the commissioning of rural hospitals, provider procurement and provider/sector relationships across the region. The Regional Manager, is ultimately responsible for the performance and strategic outcomes for rural health services across their region. This includes service re-design solutions specifically in rural settings, to radically improve Māori Health and eliminate inequities.

This role is based in the Te Waipounamu Region made up of Nelson Marlborough, Canterbury, South Canterbury, West Coast and Southern. You will need to be based in the region. Your location can be discussed at interview stage.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā weako | Skills and experience

  • Demonstrated experience in leading system and service design and implementation within the life course area/focus of the group/team.
  • Experience leading highly skilled, high performing and engaged management and professional teams in multifaceted and demanding environments, including building capability and lifting performance of a team/unit.

  • Demonstrated experience in the development of strategies and negotiating change in collaboration with diverse stakeholders
  • Demonstrated experience at a leadership level for developing, maintaining and influencing relationships and partnerships across sectors and organisations including with Māori and Pacific Peoples and groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to think conceptually and anticipate the impact of decisions on longterm outcomes, including financial outcomes, and develop/recommend responses in consultation with key stakeholders.

Nau mai, uru mai | Come and join us.
When you join us, you become part of transforming the health system. This is a once in a life-time change, which will touch the lives of everyone in Aotearoa for generations.

Our name, Te Whatu Ora, means 'the weaving of wellness'. Whatu is the combining of people, resources, organisations, thoughts and actions for the betterment and wellbeing of all.

Whatu is also a direct reference to the pupil of the eye, and the vision required of the new entity and system.

We are working towards a system that better meets the complex demands of a growing population, addresses the persistent inequalities experienced by Māori and ensures improved access, experience and outcomes for those traditionally not well served by the system - Māori, Rural Communities, Pacific and Disabled People.
