The Lead Adviser - Service Support will work closely with regional Lead Advisers - Wellbeing and national stakeholders to support Awhi Mai Awhi Atu | Counselling in Schools.


The Lead Adviser will be the key coordination point for initiatives at the national level related to counselling support through Awhi Mai Awhi Atu | Counselling in Schools.


The Lead Adviser will:

  • Develop a national implementation plan to support counselling initiatives in eight regions
  • Manage relationships with regional offices and national stakeholders and share information across the programme
  • Provide advice on how the counselling in schools work could work collaboratively with other mental health and wellbeing supports in schools, including Mana Ake and Social Workers in Schools
  • Build connections with relevant Ministry strategies, approaches and initiatives

Mōhou ake | About you
You will bring your experience working on other wellbeing and counselling initiatives, particularly with children in the school environment.

You will be able to make connections to other initiatives that the team is working including Stand-down, Suspension, Exclusion and Expulsion, Bullying Prevention and response and the PB4L suite.


Your strength will be your ability to manage relationships across multiple stakeholders and your ability to analyse information across a range of sources.


You will have excellent project management and communication skills, with the ability to respond to the changing needs of communities as they emerge.

You will have experience in implementing complex projects based in regional offices and the ability to influence others,


As a Lead Adviser you will have a passion for supporting an inclusive education system that meets the needs of all ākonga.


To be successful in the role you will:

  • require a passion for working in a team that prioritises working with schools on ākonga mental health and wellbeing
- be passionate about diversity and demonstrate your ability to work with Māori and Pacific communities, and ākonga with learning support needs
- have excellent communication and analytical skills
- prioritise building great relationships and partnerships with people at all levels of the organisation
- have a team mindset and flexibility to work across multiple workstreams to achieve the group outcomes and priorities.
- adapt to working in a fast-paced environment
- demonstrate knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an understanding of Te Ao Māori and promote tikanga and Te Reo Māori. You will also have knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an appreciation of te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) as it applies in the public sector.

At Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga, we work to provide services and support nationally, regionally and locally to the education sector, and in some cases, directly to ākonga and whanau.

To better deliver on this, we are undergoing an organisational design change. The transition phase to improve the way we deliver our purpose will be complete in 2023.


Te Pae Aronui was established within Te Mahau to provide the education sector with support and services that are more locally responsive, more accessible, and integrated.

We gather insights, regulate, have service design and delivery functions, understand ākonga, whānau, communities and businesses - and use that to shape and influence the direction of education in Aotearoa New Zealand.
