Mō tēnei tūranga | About this role


As Senior Health and Safety Advisor you are responsible for implementation of the Health and Safety at Work Act (HSWA) across the Ministry and delivery of the Ministry's Health and Safety work programme.

The role includes development of the Ministry's policies and practices in line with legislation and associated updates, the Ministry's Health and Safety's risk profile and best practice.


Such work is undertaken in collaboration with managers and staff across the Ministry to provide expert advice, support, guidance, and training to continuously improve the Ministry's Health and Safety position and culture.

As the Senior Health and Safety Advisor, you will:

  • Support the Ministry to meet HSWA Requirements
  • Provide expert advice and support the development of the Ministry's health and safety, policies and practices by defining, reviewing and updating policies, guidelines and tools across these disciplines in line with best practice, recent decisions and legislation changes.
  • Promote a strong health and safety culture by working collaboratively other advisors and senior advisors, managers and their teams to increase understanding of the mandatory requirements of health and safety in particular and best practices to comply with that.
  • Lead and/or contribute to projects and initiatives to improve and lift health and safety practice across the Ministry.
  • Support and assist with the implementation and ongoing management of health and safety risks, in line with the Ministry's risk management approach.
  • Collaborate with staff across the Ministry to provide support in identifying and monitoring health and safety risks at the regional and enterprise level, and to ensure effective controls are in place to minimise such risks.
  • Provide expert advice and support to staff and key stakeholders across the Ministry including training, incident management, engagement and reporting at an operational level
  • Continuously seek ways to improve and streamline the team's service delivery through the development of tools / resources / and selfservices tools.
  • Contribute to the Ministry meeting its obligation as set out in the Worker Participation Agreement.

As the Senior Health and Safety Advisor you will bring your sound knowledge of HSWA Requirements, and ability to lead, coach and mentor others to achieve shared outcomes.


You will also demonstrate:

  • A track record of bringing people together and leading, coaching and mentoring others to achieve outcomes
  • A proven ability to use data and insights to identify trends, risks and opportunities, to influence and guide organisational and systemlevel decision making
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • A commitment to ongoing personal and professional development

At Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga, we work to provide services and support nationally, regionally and locally to the education sector, and in some cases, directly to ākonga and whanau.

To better deliver on this, we are currently undergoing an organisational design change. The transition phase to improve the way we deliver our purpose will be complete in 2023.
