We have an exciting opportunity for an accomplished technical leader with experience managing complex issues in a dynamic operational environment to work with a team of outstanding individuals committed to supporting the Waitangi Tribunal.

The Registrar is responsible for the technical leadership to ensure that claimants to the Waitangi Tribunal can have their claims registered and considered appropriately.

A key focus for this role is providing strategic and technical leadership around registry services to support the development and implementation of the Tribunal's inquiry programme.


Working with the Director and Deputy Director, the Registrar will have a central role in managing key stakeholder relationships for the Waitangi Tribunal Unit.


The Registrar holds and performs the statutory responsibility of Registrar for the Waitangi Tribunal in accordance with the Treaty of Waitangi Act 1975.

The Waitangi Tribunal is a permanent commission of inquiry charged with making recommendations on claims brought by Māori relating to Tiriti o Waitangi.

The work of the Waitangi Tribunal Unit includes registering claims, conducting and analysing research, liaising with parties to an inquiry, and assisting the Tribunal to draft its reports.

He pūkenga tou/Skills and Experience
Experience working with judiciary and a commitment to further develop your knowledge in Te Reo

Māori will be an advantage.

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • A Bachelor of Laws or higher;
  • Admission as Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand and a current practising certificate (or eligibility to hold one);
  • Sound Treaty of Waitangi and public law knowledge and experience with proven skills in researching and preparing legal opinions, and litigation management;
  • Litigation experience particularly in Treaty of Waitangi and Public Law issues preferred but not essential;
  • A welldeveloped understanding of Tribunal jurisprudence;
  • Proven technical leadership skills, particularly in developing the capability of others;
  • Experience working with Māori groups and organisations;
  • A sound track record in supporting and implementing changes to business and work processes;
  • Welldeveloped organisational, strategic planning and writing skills; and
  • Excellent interpersonal skills which will enable you to establish relationships and work effectively with a range of teams.

Utu ā-tau/Salary
The appointing salary for this role will be between $128,129 and $179,192 based on skills and experience
