KiwiRail are looking for a permanent Sales, Travel and Customer Care Manager, based in either Wellington or Christchurch to join our Great Journeys of NZ team.

What you'll do


The Sales, Travel & Customer Care Manager will lead the Tours, Short Break & Customer Care team to maximise profitability, delivery, and customer experience.

Reporting to the General Manager, GJNZ, this role is an exciting opportunity for a collaborative, commercially savvy and progressive leader to help shape the future of the GJNZ's newest tourism offerings.


The role will lead the growth and expansion of our tours and package businesses, with the goal to grow through great products and customer service.

Responsible for leading the GJNZ tours and package market penetration with the objective of increasing sales.

This role will focus on building customer loyalty, achieving revenue targets, improving margin contribution, and actively growing new business opportunities.


Specifically, your accountabilities will include:

  • Leading the growth of the Tours, Groups, Package and Charter team, growing the business beyond seat in train sales.
  • Lead the strategic input into GJNZ strategy, working on growing the IBO/ ITO/ Group markets and and integrate customer offerings.
  • Ensure the team are across customers' needs and market trends.
  • Form strong relationships with wholesalers & retail partners to grow and develop new and existing opportunities.
  • Understand customer and stakeholder requirements.
  • Accountable for proactively leading the Travel Centre & Customer team, ensuring they are across business objectives and strategy.
  • Deliver initiatives costeffectively, and where initiatives show a positive return on investment. Understand and utilise benefits realisation and data to make strategic partnership arrangements.

You must be results focused, savvy, commercially, agile, and have a great team attitude. Naturally you will be good with numbers and have an ability to translate insights into actions.

Health and Safety is an important part of how KiwiRail operates. You will be a safety leader and will be expected to "walk the safety talk"

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • 6+ years in a sales and/ or tourism leadership role
  • Relevant Tertiary Qualification (business, commerce, etc)
  • Strong understanding of the travel industry and customised group sales
  • Excellent leadership skills
  • Proven track record of achieving growth in sales results
  • Strong commercial acumen. Proven ability to analyse, interpret and problem solve around business data to provide market and operating insights.
  • Strong relationship and communication skills, with demonstrated ability to build relationships and influence collaborative working across KiwiRail.
