About the role | Mō te tūnga

As an MP Support Advisor, you'll be working based in the Whanganui office, for 40 hours per week. You'll provide community engagement and constituent services for Carl Bates MP. The role also administers and supervises the day-to-day operation of the office to ensure all necessary functions are covered.


This is a wide and varied position and at times you'll need to support the Member at community-based events and other times attend these meetings.

The ability to build strong and trusted relationships is key to being successful in this role.

You'll need to have strong relationship management, interpersonal skills, and the ability to work with a diverse range of people and organisations.

You'll be comfortable with supervising, coaching, managing and coordinating staff who might be working in a hybrid model, that is, working remotely, working in the office and/or out in the community.

Responsibilities | Ngā haepapa

  • Liaise between the Member and the community, representing the Member where required
  • Administer and supervise office processes, procedures and standards to enable the smooth running of the office(s), ensuring staff understand their responsibilities and are aware of the confidential nature of their work
  • Manage (or be involved in) the Member's support budget allocation, process expenses and follow up on any issues, and deliver monthly certification reports for the Member's approval
  • Develop and maintain relationships with local groups and networks, to understand and respond to their needs
  • Receive and investigate constituents' concerns and issues, meeting with constituents for further information where required
  • Advocate for constituents at Ministerial level, with Government agencies, e.g. Work & Income, Immigration NZ, and with other business and community organisations where required

The pay band for the role starts at $70,000 per annum and appointments will be based on skills and experience.

All employees who work for MPs are employed on an 'events based' agreement, with your employment linked to your MP.

This role is based at the Whanganui office, for 40 hours per week.
