We are looking for a new Head of Department to join our Virtual Art Department.


As the HoD you will be responsible for managing the Virtual Art Department resources, shows and staff for the delivery of quality VFX products and services.

The Virtual Art Department is one of only a few of its kind in the world.

Our small and passionate team of generalists deliver real-time assets for Mocap, Previs and Animation using the unique Wētā proprietary pipeline and contribute to the successful delivery of shows.

You will have an excellent understanding of VFX technologies and workflows as well as:

  • Technical skills to be able to make practical judgements
  • Being able to analyse situations to problem solve effectively and quickly
  • Knowledge of how the Virtual Art Department serves other departments and fits in the pipeline

Key duties and responsibilities include:

  • Responsible for development and execution of the department vision, ensuring the highest quality standards are maintained
  • As the starting point of projects/shows, ensure assets can be interacted with thereby providing optimal and accurate representation of real
- time assets and sets for story/shot development

  • Investigate new technologies and workflows for use in the VFX pipeline
  • Maintain knowledge on technical/industry advancements
  • Contribute to research and development activities
  • Oversee new project setups internally and externally
  • Ensure the best talent is recruited by participating in hiring of crew
  • Build and maintain a positive working environment with high morale
  • Work with the Producer and Production Team on show planning, scheduling, and resourcing artists and technical resources

Software skills required:

  • Maya advanced level
  • Mari/Substance intermediate level
  • Motion builder intermediate level
  • Proprietary tools and VFX pipeline for all Virtual Production related tasks

Your leadership skills will include:

  • Understanding the responsibilities and expectations of the department and its alignment to the wider company strategy and performance
  • Have at least 10 years practical VFX postproduction experience including depth and breadth in discipline/s
  • Able to work well under pressure and meet strict deadlines as well as motivating and guiding a team to do the same
  • Capable of managing in a dynamic environment and leading change
  • Develop and mentor artists providing guidance and sharing insight and experience to grow their capabilities and get the best from them
  • Able to present a professional representation of Wētā FX in all external interactions and act as a passionate Ambassador with enthusiasm for Wētā FX
  • Able to understand and manage financial/budget information as required
  • Have strong team working skills with the ability to build effective teams within the department
  • Welldeveloped project management skills
