We are looking to recruit to a permanent full time consultant position to join our infection team at Waikato hospital, Hamilton. We are a friendly enthusiastic team.
Applications are welcome from those trained in microbiology or dual trained in microbiology and infectious diseases with flexibility for the successfully candidate if dual trained to work in both microbiology and infectious diseases.
The successful applicant will be based in Hamilton at Waikato hospital, working in partnership with two other microbiologists at the Waikato hospital laboratory and with our three infectious diseases physicians.

  • Applicants must hold a Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (FRCPA) or an equivalent qualification and be eligible for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ).

The Pathology service provides an extensive range of diagnostic testing across five laboratory sites in the Waikato region and processes referred specialist testing for the wider region. The laboratory provides almost complete microbiology services in bacteriology, mycology, antimicrobial susceptibility, mycobacterial culture and DST, infectious disease serology including high volume work and conditions rare in New Zealand, molecular diagnostics, viral and bacterial, both high volume and specialist testing. There is an excellent microbiology laboratory with a molecular diagnostic suite and plans to include a sequencer.
The microbiology and infectious disease departments work together closely with weekly laboratory and clinical meetings.
The infectious diseases department provides a comprehensive tertiary level service for Hamilton hospital and regional hospitals within Waikato. We provide specialist input and a consultation service to the large critical care unit, haematology unit which includes stem cell transplantation, renal, cardiothoracic, orthopaedic and vascular surgery in addition to medicine and oncology. The department provides out patient care for infectious diseases patients including those living with HIV, TB and an out patient intra venous antibiotics service. We are actively engaged in clinical research.
There is an advanced trainee in infectious disease, infectious diseases/AMS pharmacist and specialist nurses in infectious diseases, HIV and sepsis. We work closely with the Infection Prevention and Control team, sexual health department and colleagues in respiratory medicine.
